well... around here in NC.. as the gass proces started to go up peeps flocked to the pump t get gass.. and now much of the area gass stations are out of gass... Anyone else had this happen yet in there area?

here where im at in europe we're paying €1.20 a litre, which translates to over 6 dollars a gallon. and we're doing alright, people just dont feel the need to haul themselves places by car all the time.

i dont know if they teach you this over there, but its harmful for the environment  :)

Primary, in some places that is logistically impossible.  Unlike Europe, the US in some parts has horrible public transportation and do to the abundance of land, everything is built quite spread out. So thanks for your fine tips that we already know of.

Harv, this is part of the medias fault.  Basis of gas prices is like anything else, supply and demand.  Supply has now been affected due to the entire gulf region being whiped out, I think it's about 20-30% of all oil production for the US. But, when the media keeps screaming about high gas prices, it send every idiot and there mom to go fill up everything they go which begins to dry up the supply much faster then needed, so the prices begin to skyrocket.

One funny thing about all of this is that primary has one moot point, they did a survey to see how the prices of gas would affect peoples traveling plans for labor day, almost 98% said not at all. So maybe when it hits $5 a gallong or more, someone will change some of their habits.

actually you apparently dont know much about european landscape neither. it's not all one big city, theres small cities, large cities, rural areas, abandoned areas, mountaneous areas, etc. the "abundance of land" isnt really relevant, because european countries are far smaller in terms of population.

its not like catching a tram is easy everywhere.. many people i know take buses to school every day, buses that go maybe once per hour or even less than that. the whole culture is different here. i used to live in canada and i know how it is over there. here people have bus and train timetables with them and plan ahead. im not saying ALL americans should sell their cars and start using public transportation for everything. im saying, you guys should take a look at the european way.

our public transportation simply isn't as good... here in Minnesota we have one lightrail that runs from one station by mall of america to downtown Minneapolis, that's it. Our bus system is completely non existant outside of the downtown area... it would be impossible to not have a car where I live, asuuming you're not homeless or work right by your house.

I've been to different places in Europe many times and I've noticed it has really good public transportation for the most part (compared to where I live)... where I've been things have all been pretty close together as well, which makes walking and taking buses easier.

heh, public transport probably isnt that good because you don't have to pay riduculous prices for cars/insurance and gas, here you pay about $7-8 for a gallon of petrol, then if your 18 and just passed your test, you probably pay between £1500+ depending on egine size, so, about $2,200+, then the car itself, again, i believe its cheaper to buy cars there, and a lot of people in the UK import cars, then there is road tax, which is about £80-160 a year, depending again on the size of the engine. Then car maintenance. It all adds up to a very expensive thing to have. If your prices do go up that much, and people can't start affording to run their huge ass trucks, i am sure a demand for public transport would happen, and your cities/towns will have to do something about that. The unfortunate thing is, once your prices go up, UK prices will probably match that rise. which makes it even worse for us...

I live in the suburbs, so public transportation is practically non-existant. I'll just not go to school if it gets too bad.

I paid $33 for 9 gallons at $3.45 a / gal for premium.  Fun.

3.04 and rising down here in Texas...rose 40 cents today.

This gas problem makes me wonder why I am still looking for a car.

they shouldnt have released some of the stratigic reserve. its a retardly short sighted move. the best would to let the price sky rocket. as the price sky rockets people will start to consume less. As they consume less, there will be a much greater interest in alternitive energies. The less consumption, the more supply. As supply rises and demand falls, so does the price. The price of gas falls, and americans can have their precious suvs.

Almost the whole rest of the world has been paying much much more than the U.S for years now, while the U.S consumes far more than most of the rest of the world. Americans need to pull their heads out of their asses and consume less.

Maybe the next big car promotion should be "Buy a car, and get free gas for life!"

Though that'd probably be one freaking expensive car...

Well Bush was so concerned about the little windy patch down south that was disturbing his oil flow, that he decided to by up loads of oil from europe and help hike our prices even higher.... thanks.

It would have been nice though if your president had been a little bit more concerned about the tens of thousands of people abandoned In New Orleans and surrounding areas, without food or water or any aid, rather than making sure his chums could fill their SUV's with cheap petrol.

Gas stations here are ALL OUT OF GAS!  But hey, I drive a diesel and there is plenty of that here.  ;)

$3.50 a gallon here in Chicago which is up .50 from last week. Havent had a problem of running out of gas that I know of here though which I am thankful for. OK, I know Iraq has oil. we "liberated" their asses (I know i dont agree with that or the whole war) so dont they owe us a bit? Or are the raising of gas prices because of the war in iraq? ???

The problem is extracting the oil in Iraq. The damage done to the pipelines by the war has left the oil infrastructure essentially inoperable and it could take many years to repair.

lower the demand of oil/stop global warming: make fat people walk.

For those of you in the U.S and canada, many people are striking from buying gas on the 7th through the 9th (this worked before back in the 90's) to hopefully lower the price of gas.  Buy all the gas you want on the 6th and 10th, but try to get by without buying gas on the 7th through 9th.

For all the people who think that compared to europe, we have really low gas prices, they havn't taken into account the hundreds of billions of dollars we spend (as a nation) occupying foreign countries to make sure they keep giving us cheap gas.

Tax dollars ---> Military = cheap, cheap gas (comparatively) from occupied lands
Tax dollars ---> Intfrastructure/Mass Transit = not needing cheap, cheap gas to get around

Gas just dipped under 3 dollars here, and I am almost in need of getting some. I saw a truck with the logo of my gas station on it carrying gas, hopefuly that will make it drop again. I'll probably just try getting 10 dollars worth at a time until it goes back down.
