Title: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on July 22, 2005, 10:23:01 pm
Just wondering who in our community has one and anything worth sharing they have found.  I got mine about 2 months ago and love it.

I have hot shots golf, ridge racer, FIFA and NBA street.

I am considering buying a PSP. I suppose it has many uses... and not forgetting the use a PS3 controller.

I saw this add on an eBay auction, it advertises pc programs that allow you to download dvds and browse the web.... check them out. Do a search: psp dvd    ---> You need a pc though :(

Weak, the new 2.00 PSP OS is being released the 27th in Japan, so assume a release of 2-3 weeks after for the USA release. The way to get this is to download off the internet, or to update directly from and while connected from the PSP, or to grab a copy of the newest game and use that.

Yeah, PSP is the shit man. It is much better than the Nintendo DS, which has no other use right now than an alarm clock and to play GBA games. I had Tiger Woods and NBA Street, but traded them in to take advantage of a deal GameStop was running. I now have, yes illegal, emulators and roms running an NES, and an SNES, with all the Mario games, Donkey Kong 1, and Chrono Trigger (omg best game ever) It's a pretty neat experience using the somewhat good quality but quiet sound from the speakers to listen to music instead of through the shitty earphones. Use iPod earphones or your own headphones if you don't like using the speaker. I'm gonna wait for the 2 GB Memory sticks to buy an upgrade. They are gonna retail at 350, so I will find one at a wholesale site for 300 hopefully.

crypt, im runnin frimware 1.5.1 :(   I'm assuming you are running 1.5 or lower to run the emulators....  i DROOL over being able to do that.

PSP's are awesome but the games are fairly weak so far.  Can't wait for 2.00 update and GTA: Liberty Stories

Hell yeah, Wombles. Web browser in 2.00 and I'm hoping that they can crack it seemingly easily. I also hope they get the SNES emulator running smoother than it currently does.

i have had my Jap PSP for almost a year now i love it one thing i would tell you is not to upgrade i made that mistake and now no hombrough/hacks work coz onvle firmwear v1.0/1.5 have been hacked but the new V2.0 is good i have upgraded you get to chose a wallpapers for your PSP and you get a web brouser to suft the web wireless its awsome

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: crypt on August 02, 2005, 11:44:38 pm
The August background is major smexy. I do wanna put my own wallpapers up though. (Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess OH YEAH!) I want 2.00 because we have a Wi-Fi connection at work. I would log in and stuff. I think I might be able to hold off until I get MediEvil Ressurection or GTA: LCS later on this year when it'll be a required update to play those games. All this makes me want to fork over the dough to go completely wireless in my house, which I really don't need to be doing with College coming up soon.

A good site to read about PSP emulator hacks is www.pspupdates.com I warn you though, if you have access to a PSP and can use the KXploit method to make a bootable emulator for the PSP, do not look for ROMS on that PC. These ROMS come from untrustworthy sites, therefore some contain viruses. Download the roms on your Mac so that these viruses will not hurt you.

Hey weak...
where did you find the update for your PSP?
I have been trying to hack the wipeout pure browser with no luck.
Is it a huge process to install the update?

Also... I use ipsp and pspware to convert movies to my psp. I have season 1  of the Chappele show on there. and a bunch of movies ready to go (1gig memory card). I think psp ware gives you file size and quality options.

Hey cotton, i can't find the link to the .... i got it off of the official PSP japanese, site....  i do have the eboot file that i could pass along to you... just hit me up on GR or AIM.  The updater takes like a minute, just make sure to have your PSP charged.

weakspot

Will you explain to me how the 2.00 update works.

I downloaded EBOOT.PBP to the mac and loaded it in the PSP/GAME/UPDATE folder.

I then turned on my psp  and clicked on the update but after a few seconds it says it cannot open because and error has occured.

Please Help.

wow, the only thing i can imagine is that you have a corrupted eboot file....  contact me on aim... its the same as my name here.

i'll send you the file that i used.  worked perfectly on my PSP and 4 others.

Has anyone played Coded Arms?? I read some shitty reviews, but I still wanna get it.
Not sure how an FPS will play out on the PSP.

If you can get used to the HORRID controls, then you will enjoy it. Think of Halo but shave 4 review scale points off of it.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: cottonmouth on August 08, 2005, 08:37:53 pm
Guess I'm gonna have to resist the temptation, being that i'm an uncoordinated tard, and the controls get confising for me anyway.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on August 08, 2005, 09:05:01 pm
if they are anything like Dead To Right's control fuck it.  I hate the so much emphasis is placed on a game's graphics when the developers miss the boat on the control.  I don't care how good a game looks, if i need to grow another thumb to play it, its gonna suck.

Crypt... you have any games yet.... me and cotton will take you on over xlink.  he schooled me in HSG the other day.

im waiting for a good action adventure or a good side scroller.  I would also love a nice shooter... like 1942 was for the NES.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?

The next two games I plan on getting are MediEvil Ressurection and GTA LC. I do work at a game store however, so I always have room for impulsive buys.

I don't have 2.00, but speaking of that, do you know if they will make you update to 2.00 in the next wave of PSP games coming in 2 weeks?

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on August 29, 2005, 06:46:29 pm
From what I hear, they will eventually make you update with certain games you buy.  That's why I'm sticking with my Japanese PSP frimware....  I hear that it has already been cracked.

anyone get any new games?

I just picked up Medieval and Burnout: Legends.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: crypt on September 24, 2005, 08:39:36 am
Yeah, just got MediEvil, I've loved this game ever since the original on PSX. Burnout is like crack, I don't really wanna get back into the whole Burnout scene.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: cottonmouth on September 26, 2005, 04:15:13 pm
Picked up Death Jr. and Coded Arms.

Coded Arms is clunky with the controls, just like Crypt said. And I finished the entire game in about 6hrs, this one is going up on ebay.

Death Jr. is fun, have not really gotten into it yet, but it is fun.

Cant wait to see what SOCOM: Navy Seals is like. I saw a preview on IGN and it looks pretty sweet, I just hope the controls are managable.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: crypt on September 26, 2005, 08:54:34 pm
Yeah, I fear that if I purchase SOCOM on the PSP that I will want to buy another PS2 so that I can spend more just to play SOCOM 3 online.

I've also heard that Madden on the PSP is the greatest handheld football game ever. (which isn't a very tough task really) I'm interested in how the controls are for it.

I also might pick up Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006 on it. I'm getting it on the Xbox 360 when that releases, but 2005 on Xbox won't tide me over until then.

Another tid-bit of info I heard from the GameStop Conference (from my store manager) was that you can hook up your PSP wirelessly to your Xbox 360 and play GTA: Liberty City Stories from the TV using the PSP as the controller. I can't wait!

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on September 27, 2005, 04:32:26 am
yeah, i think im gonna sell back a few games (FIFA/RidgeRacer/NBAStreet) and flip them for Madden now that it is time for the football season.

I just wish someone would make a good old fashioned sidescroller action/adventure game.... something like Zelda: A Link To the Past...

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: crypt on September 28, 2005, 01:22:21 pm
I just picked up Tiger Woods 2006 yesterday. It's really good, load times are infinitely better (about 6 seconds compared to 1 minute with 2005 on PSP) which is almost all I care about, plus they made it a bit more challenging which is golden in my book.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: BFG on September 28, 2005, 01:52:19 pm
have u tried watching a video or anything on it yet, how does it stand up? I can't really imagine wanting to watch a movie or somthing on such a small screen, is it pretty clear?

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: crypt on September 29, 2005, 01:29:53 am
The quality is phenomenal. I watched the Spider-Man 2 UMD it came with, at times I forgot I was at home instead of at the theater. The only thing is I don't watch enough movies to want to pay 20 bucks a pop for every one. They also make "home theater experience" type things for it. It's great for airplane flights if you get a power brick or extra battery for it I've heard.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on September 29, 2005, 06:43:13 am
i've put few videos on mine and yes they look amazing.  Not just amazing for a handheld, but just truly outstanding.  The sharpness of the screen is just something i never thought was possible.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: cottonmouth on September 29, 2005, 06:02:11 pm
The UMD movies look incredible, they use 'soft cuts' so it's easy on the eyes.  I bought kill bill, and the fight scenes look great, I figured the video quality would fall apart on such a small screen, but it holds together and looks amazing.
I ripped several DVD's to my memory stick, and at a medium quality setting it still looks and sounds good. I fit 7 full movies on a 1gig duo.

sold back FIFA, Medieval, and NBA street and picked up Virtua Tennis and FIFA 06... by FAR the best games I have played on the PSP in fun factor and controls.

my top 5 PSP games.

1. Hot Shots Golf
2.  FIFA 06
3.  Ridge Racer
4. Burnout
5. Virtua Tennis

your favorite games?

Well. Soon to be the only game I will ever care about on PSP:

Grand Theft Auto: LCS! Gonna pay it off with my paycheck on Friday and pick it up Wednesday!

Oh god, the shitty grades I will be making.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?

crypt, let me know how this game plays.  Im interested in it, even though i have never played any GTA game.  Im worried most about the controls... same thing Im wondering for SOCOM.

FIFA 06 is rocking my world at the moment.  The multiplayer works right out of the box and I've been busy getting worked over by some fucking euro footballers.  Mother fuckers.

I'm getting it mostly to roam in the cars, but I will jump out from time to time to do some cop-popping. Hopefully it will keep me immersed until the Xbox 360 comes out.

what do u mean weakspot that the multiplayer works right out of the box?

Can you play multiplayer without having to do the xlink crap that is with other games like Ridge Racer.  Update me.

Thanks.

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on October 19, 2005, 07:29:55 am
Yeah, John, it works out of the box.

FIFA 06 is the first game I have played where i can connect to my WAP and finde servers directly from the PSP.  No xLinx needed for it to work.

You have to register for an EAOnline account, which you do from your PSP and takes 2 minutes.  You have to pay 2.00 or allow them to send you emails with special offers... SPAM.  I just sent it to my SPAM account.

It gives you the ping of guys you are playing so you can get a good connection.  You can also chat.  Would be nice to have another way to talk... like voice so I can talk smack when Van Nistelroy puts a header in the back of the net.

like that is ever going to happen, damn Man U scum ;)

How many guys can you connect to weak and what is the connection like - when you mean talk how'd u mean - u haven't got a proper keyboard on the thing i can't think of a obvious easy way to type text etc

Title: Re: Sony PSP, anyone?
Post by: theweakspot on October 19, 2005, 08:38:19 pm
The PSP doesnt have a proper keyboard. but you can call up a cell phone-like keypad where you can enter text.  The next frimware revision is supposed to allow you to call up a qwerty keybaord.  You can also save and call up 'quick messages' like ready up, or let's play 6min halves, or whatever else you liike... sorta like the quick commands in GhR.

The connections have been very very very smooth.  I've played with a few guys as far away as Uruguay and some across the pond in the UK.  There is an actual WiFi ard in the PSP, so it connects through the  wireless boradcast siganl I'm broadcasting over my mac.

FIFA 06 can only play 2 players, so just me and another bloke.  I have played hotshots gold which allows for 8, and Burnout and ridge racer which allow for 6, i believe.

There is talk that there will be some sort of headset in future games, where you can communicate over voice.

Holy crap. GTA is freaking awesome. If you own a PSP, this is a must have. If you don't, get one and then look at the previous sentence for the next thing you should do. Don't even hesitate. It plays just like it does on consoles yet I can sit on the crapper or play it on the go.
