Title: Top ten movie list
Post by: z][t-Rampage on February 18, 2005, 12:42:39 pm
Hey guys. i'm always looking for a good film to watch and sometimes a movie i never heard of is recomended. so what are your 10 favorite films?

mine are..(in no particular order)

1. Blade runner - dir - Ridley Scott. 1982(not the directors cut/original is hard to get ahold of)
the scifi movie that everyone has tried to top and failed until Matrix.

2. live flesh - dir - Almodovar
great director who includes you in the story and characters faster than most.
his earlier films may be a little too dramatic for my taste.

3. shawshank redemption - dir - Frank Darabont
not much to say. great film, actors, director, script.

4. lawrence of arabia - dir David Lean. 1962
shot on 70mm with unbelievable photography. one of those films i watch every
couple of years. a masterpiece in filmmaking.

5. day of the jackal - Fred Zinneman. 1973
Might be a bit slow for some, but the way that this film is told and filmed is great.

6. Gattaca - dir - Andrew Niccol. 1992
for some reason this film always comes to mind. its got a great mood and amasing
art direction. and ofc photography. a bit slow, but worth every minute.

7. one flew over the cuckoo's nest - dir - Milos Forman. 1975
amazing movie. No wonder jack turned into who he is today.

8. platoon - dir - Oliver Stone. 1986
another one of those movies i pick up every coupe of years. just a great movie

9. being there - dir - Hal Ashby. 1979
unbelievably great movie. Peter Sellers last movie before he died. a must see

10. gladiator - dir - Ridley Scott. 2000
for some reason, i can see this movie any time.

shit i should have done a top 50! :)

looking forward to what ya'll have up your sleeves

proud to be z][t-Rampage

I have no problem making top ten movies lists for each year, but ever...that is a tricky proposition.

American Beauty is my favorite movie ever, after that these in no particular order are some of my favorites.
12 Angry Men (classic jury deliberation movie with Henry Fonda)
Bend It Like Beckham
Donnie Darko
Fucking Amal (Show Me Love is English title)-it is a very interesting Swedish lesbian film
Garden State
High Strung (one of the funniest comedies ever)
Saved! (satire of conservative religion)
Chasing Amy and Dogma
Aladdin and The Lion King
The Matrix (original, not sequels, though Animatrix is good tooo)
Ran and Kurosawa's Dreams
O Brother Where Art Thou?
Waking Life (interesting live action animated over, all about discussing philosophy and such)

God, there are so many other great movies, I guess I'll restrict myself to these 16 or so.

Alright I did a little search on the great Austrian movie Komm süßer Tod and found it here!!! (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0271029/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxzZz0xfGxtPTUwMHx0dD1vbnxmYj11fHBuPTB8cT1Db21lIFN3ZWV0IERlYXRofGh0bWw9MXxubT1vbg__;fc=1;ft=20
)

The international title is "Come Sweet Death". If you have ever the chance to see it, do so. It's great fun and if you understand german get the original version. Austria as we live, hehe.

is this the top 10 films ever made, top 10 movies you've ever seen?

why arn't people mentioning films like North by Northwest, or the Birds, films like Cinema paradiso , the godfather, Citizen Kane, Apocalypse Now, Rear window, All quiet on the Western Front, dances with wolves one flew over the cuckoo's nest, Das Boot, Se7en, Leon blade runner, duck soup, three colors red, brazil twelve monkeys   or more modern films like big fish and lost in translation.

and why the hell are films such as Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and Jackie Brown (jacky brown is one of the worst films ive sat through in a long long time)  being listed? not meaning to start a war here (actually maybe i am) but they couldn't stand in the same queue as some of the quality of other films that have been mentioned. tlak about a divide of class when you compare  lets say Saving Private Ryan (since several folk mentioned it) with a film like dances with wolves or Apocalypse now, or citizen kane. There is no comparison, there is no competition at all!!

Actually, I mentioned All Quiet On The Western Front, and If I was sonber at the time, or right now, I woulda have mentioend Das Boot and the Godfather. Also liked Dances WIth Wolves. It's very hgard to remember good movies, cuz all the really good ones pop into your head later on after you've posted.

dances with wolves : if i had a top 10 worst movie list, it would be on my number one spot....
jeezus, corny, bad cameo, bad acting, (kevind costner is playing like the tin man), bad casting, plot is ridiculus etc....

Citizen Cane should be number 1 on everyone top ten list, u right on that. :)

And Blade runner is soooo good, i mean it has been the inspiration of every modern Science fiction film, the decors are sublime !

Jackie brown, the intro alone, must be one of the longest shots i know in a movie , (besides massive attack music clip) ever in a movie, !

Saving private ryan does deserves his place i think, but only for it's music and sound work, the story ain't worth much i think :)

Anway, to many good movies jump in my mind now who should be mentioned 2 =)

Title: Re: Top ten movie list

We'll have to agree to disagree with Dances with wolves ;)

Quote

Go and watch "Stalker" By Andri Tarkovsky  -- there is a single shot that is aprox 17 minutes long i think.

OOOPS - Or you could go and watch "Russian Ark" (and amazing film) the entire film is taken in a single shot - if not for the story etc just watch it to marvel at how they managed to do such a complex and vast film in one single take!

Title: Re: Top ten movie list

lol BFG :)

no, the purpose of the top ten list was to see what peoples favorites where and to see if there are any new movies that i or other havent seen. so it comes down to personal taste. i think that a thread on the greatest movies ever made would become a heated debate, being that peoples tastes are different from oneanother. but man! are there alot of movies i gotta rent after the lists that have been posted here.

*runs to the video store

---
*edit

damnit! you posted while i was posting. another cool thing too -  is that there is a variety of ages that visit these forums. its always fun to recomend a movie that a generation might not have seen. but it seems that most people here are movie buffs

*whispers - dr shivago

oh oh oh how could i forget " Rosencrantz and Guildenstein are Dead" - probaby not to everyones tastes but the little assides with the invention of the burger, the discovery of gravity etc were rib crackers :)

Well, you all have to see more Austrian movies... there are some quite good ones.

E.g. Komm Süßer Tod (Come Sweet Death) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0271029/), Silentium (http://imdb.com/title/tt0386038/) (well, seems there is no english dub at the moment).

One very nice german movie was Goodbye Lenin (http://imdb.com/title/tt0301357/).

Another one I can recommend is the swedish movie Kopps (http://imdb.com/title/tt0339230/), which had me laughing for hours.

A few weeks ago, I also saw the original War of the Worlds (http://imdb.com/title/tt0046534/) from 1953, whose special effects left me speechless.

Strange... I can't think of any recent movie which has captured my attention for long...

Well there are a lot of great movies:

Movies I have seen very often - Terminator 2(a true classic), The Rock(excellent action), Black Hawk Down(reminded me on my army time and the urban warfare training village Quantiz we had to conquer a few times).

Another movie I have seen more than dozen times is Eiskalte Engel(Cruel Intentions) - I still love this movie.

And also every older James Bond title is just very entertaining.

OH MY GOD NOMAD, ROCKY IV IS THE WORST!!!
it's such a blatant money maker, they tried to squeeze in anything that'd attract an audience:

robots=money   in the beginning, right off the bat, rocky has a fucking robot in his house that starts talking to people and serving them, trying to rip off johnny 5 or some shit. god the 80s really ruined films for a while.

american beating russian=money
picking on the fat guy=money

man, i just saw this a few days ago and i have already put most of it out of my mind, but still, the robot part right in the beginning was enough.

also, with practically every fight sequence in the rocky films, the sound effects are just too rediculous, they have little explosions every time someone gets hit. and in real boxing, if you can hit anyone that clean just once in a fight, you probably win right there 9/10 times. don't they know how to put their fists up? they abandon defense totally. Movies that I can pass time with:

Le Femme Nikita (The French version)
Casino (Can't believe no one has mentioned this)
Goodfellas
Godfather I & II (GF III sucks)
L.A. Confidential (Can't believe no one has mentioned this either)
Usual Suspects
Scarface
Pulp Fiction
Blazing Saddles
Bourne Identity

As you can tell, I think highly of organized crime movies. Also, Band of Brothers was a HBO miniseries, not a movie.

5. American Beauty

Jesus christ you guys have shitty taste.

1) The Graduate - Micheal Nichols(sp?) (1967)
2) The Bicycle Theif - Vittorio De Sica (1948)
3) Dr Strangelove: Or how I learned to stop worrying and love the bomb - Stanley Kubrick (1964)
4) 12 Angry Men - Sidney Lumet (1957)
5) Apocalypse Now (none of that redux bullshit)- Francis Ford Coppolla (1979)
6) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - George Roy Hill (1969)
7) Casablanca - Micheal Curitz (1942)
8 ) Resevoir Dogs - Quentin Tarintino (1992)
9) Full Metal Jacket - Stanley Kubrick (1987)
10) The Star Wars Trilogy  (none of that prequal bullshit)- George Lucas (1977)

Honorable Mentions: A Clockwork Orange, Terminator 2, Ghost in the Shell

I cant believe no one mentioned the graduate or doctor strangelove.
And by the way the Lord of the Rings trilogy sucked.  It's was cheesy, predictable (even people i knew who didnt read the books knew that gandalf was comming back), the acting sucked, and the ending was the most long winded pretentious piece of crap I've ever seen .  All the movie had going for it was the kick ass action (which was thoroughly kick ass mind you) and a pretty cool story.

Lord of the Rings, well yes i agree that the ending blew bubbles out my ass, talk about pretentious and long winded... but to say it was all cheesy, predictable and sucky acting i can't agree with.

I have yet to figure out why people love Citizen Kane so much.

I watched it in a Film Analysis class this year... and I had to fight to stay awake. What an absolutely horrendous movie.

Also: One I completely forgot about when I made my top 10 list: True Lies. That'd be way up there near the top. Awesome movie... and with Ahhhnold!

You've probably only seen 20 films if coach carter is among the top.

Bronto, its a difference of opinion, I had to stop myself flaming here.  But Bronto you went to see coach carter high, and how many times have you played basketball for your school?  Ive played for 2 years.  Anyway  its a difference of opinion and you have already expressed your feelings about coach carter in "what movies have you seen recently?" so why keep bringing it up?  This topic is 10 best: so my adding coach carter to my top 20 isnt off topic but you bashing it is.
