Title: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: Civrock on January 24, 2005, 06:17:10 pm (http://www.industrial-technology-and-witchcraft.de/images/mac/macintro.jpg) Never seen video footage of the introduction of the Macintosh in January 1984 was published for the first time on the Internet today. The German media agency TextLab (http://www.textlab.de/) has unearthed the only surviving video tape of the launch. Renowned Mac user Scott Knaster (http://foodisworse.typepad.com/this/) kept that Betamax video tape for 21 years. 21 years ago today, on January 24th 1984, Apple introduced the Macintosh. And we've seen that 1984 wasn't like 1984. What we've never seen indeed, was the big day itself. Lots of historic stuff has been preserved - images, texts, even sounds, and the saga has been told on and on. However only very few people have actually seen how Steve Jobs pulls the first Mac out of this bag, how the Mac introduces itself to the public, Steves biggest grin ever, and how he is obviously overwhelmed by this moment in the Cupertino Flint Center. Fear not, faithful Mac believers. We have found it. We have found what seems to be the only copy of a public TV broadcast on that very day. It was recorded and preserved by Scott Knaster, the "legendary Mac hacker", as Amazon puts it. Scott kept the tape (a NTSC Betamax III longplay) for 21 years since he keeps everything. Andy Hertzfeld saw it when he wrote the story "The Times They Are A-Changin' (http://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&story=The_Times_They_Are_A-Changin.txt)" on folklore.org. From there we followed the hints, and that's how we found it. We worked with Scott to convert it from NTSC to PAL, we've polished it, cleaned it, huged it and digitzed it. Here it is. It goes back to the people who've made the Macintosh, and to the world. The complete material of about 2 hours is returned to Scott, Andy and the folklore.org people, and this weblog will report the story of the "missing 1984 video" in detail. We'll release other clips in the coming days, so bookmark and check back. But now, Ladies and Gentlemen: please welcome - the 1984 Macintosh introduction video. A travel back in time... You can try a time sliced download here (http://www.industrial-technology-and-witchcraft.de/video.php), and if this is overloaded (it probably is), there are mirrors at macnews.de (http://www.macnews.de/news/58099), php-schmiede.de (http://www.php-schmiede.de/1984macintro_2.mov), ppcnux.de (http://www.ppcnux.de/pub/MacOSX/1984-macintro/), ftp.ppcnux.de (http://ftp://ftp.ppcnux.de/pub/MacOSX/1984-macintro/), MacTechNews.de (http://www.mac-software-updates.de/1984macintro.mov) and elbewerk (http://homepage.mac.com/sdomanske/.Movies/The_First_Mac.mov). It is a special 512k Mac...the 128k didn't have enough RAM to run the program. But alas, I still love my original 128k Mac.[/size] ;D

Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on January 26, 2005, 03:28:22 pm GS just out of curiosity what do you use your macs for? Other than gaming (AA etc) , forum whoring and other essential matters ;) Well, I use it for Photoshop and PageMaker. My parents are missionaries and I make all of their brochures and newsletters to give to the churches. I also create my own brochures, newsletters, etc. for my customers here at the car dealership. Another thing I do is make all of those military tribute web pages....I've created over 1,000 of them so far. Other than that, I use it for general stuff like gaming, surfing the internet, converting my VHS tapes to DVD (I have a converter that works with iMovie), and burning music CDs (I hate MP3...I only burn in AIFF format). Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BFG on January 26, 2005, 04:00:24 pm Pagemaker.. U looked at the new 'Pages' from apple -seems like a very nice simple DTP for newsletters etc, very user friendly (surprise surprise)
Howd u do the VHS to DVD - I mean how are you hooking your player to your Computer etc... Quote My parents are missionaries That explained a lot ;) Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on January 26, 2005, 07:31:26 pm Pagemaker.. U looked at the new 'Pages' from apple -seems like a very nice simple DTP for newsletters etc, very user friendly (surprise surprise) Howd u do the VHS to DVD - I mean how are you hooking your player to your Computer etc... The VHS to DVD is a converter made by Pinnacle Systems. I have the MovieBox DV which plugs into your FireWire port on your mac. On one side of the box, you plug in your video, and left and right audio channels (also S-video if you have it) and on the other side you plug in the FireWire. You use iMovie to capture the video, then you can edit the video and burn it onto a DVD, or transfer it back through the converter and make a new VHS tape. The actual converter box is very pretty and is designed by the good folks at Porsche. I picked the converter up back in June when I visited BTs_Lee.Harvey in North Carolina at the Apple Store there (my first trip ever to an Apple Store...the nearest one to me is 400 miles away). It works very good, and I have already converted mine and my parent's wedding videos, home movies, and lots of other stuff to DVD. Quote My parents are missionaries That explained a lot ;) Doesn't it?! muhahahahaha Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 26, 2005, 09:31:28 pm ....now we have to wait a whole 9 years before we can celebrate Macintosh's 30th birthday.

Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 27, 2005, 09:31:13 pm So am I. You can download games legally you know. It just takes awhile.
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: DarK. on January 27, 2005, 09:34:27 pm I think not having games for sale non via the internet will increase pirating
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 27, 2005, 09:36:38 pm That's possibly the most retarded thing ever. You can't hack into servers like that, and it's no harder to upload a CD to someone than a simple file. One way you get it when you want it, and you don't have to get up :D
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: DarK. on January 27, 2005, 09:43:54 pm The CD takes manual labor and dowloading a nocd image and getting a registration code, you have to go get the cd or have your forgetful friend give it to you, rather than downloading it off the internet then easily finding a no cdimage and code off the internet.
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 27, 2005, 09:46:32 pm 1.) No CD images are for the people who don't have toast. (A application, reading your stuff I bet you you wouldn't know)
2.) Registrations codes would be included in the transaction. (not the CD image) 3.) Say what? Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: DarK. on January 27, 2005, 09:51:58 pm they would be included in the pirated game? I dont think so, and I have toast, it tastes good with jelly and honey, anyway toast, do you me roxio toast? the app that burns cd's and such?
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 27, 2005, 09:54:06 pm The app that mounts images that get recognized as CDs.
CD keys are always included on the stupid torrent trackers....not that i use them. Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: c| Lone-Wolf on January 27, 2005, 10:03:24 pm You know what's fun? This went from Macintosh's introduction in 1984 to pirating software in the present day and age. And the entire conversation has been hijacked by pretty much two people. Why dont you two (Myst & dark) just PM each other, so everybody else doesnt have to read it?
I think that's a fine idea. -Lone Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 27, 2005, 10:06:05 pm He asks questions to me I answer questions from him. There's nothing stoping other people to post along the topic lines of the post. We went from 1984--->2004---2009 and what would be there. This isn't truly off topic.
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: DarK. on January 27, 2005, 10:10:00 pm This was a civil conversation about new technologies and such I dont think we were off topic.
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 27, 2005, 11:19:10 pm Disc are already being phased out. I believe it will have a application that will work like the iTMS that lets you purchase a game and DL it through only that application using a secure format. for removable media there will be things like sony's memory card.
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: DarK. on January 28, 2005, 09:24:24 pm prob with that is peoples internet connection, 56k would take DAYS to download (legally) a game like RvS:AS That is why I dont see the disc being phased out quite yet.
Title: Re: The Lost 1984 Mac Video Post by: BTs_Mysterio on January 28, 2005, 09:32:39 pm I wasn't aware people still used 56K.
