Lewis, Washington approach a car after shooting at it when it failed to stop and drove toward soldiers, despite warning shots, during a dusk patrol January 18, 2005 in Tal Afar, Iraq. The car held an Iraqi family of which the mother and father were killed. According to the U.S. Army, six children in the in the car survived, one with a non-life threatening flesh wound. U.S. military said they are is investigating the incident. (Photo by Chris Hondros/Getty Images) The New York Times ran one of these photos inside the newpaper on like page 4, otherwise American media generally ignored this story. the sequence is extremely trajic. The Images are no exceptionally graphic, especially when viewing the thumbnails. My question for you is, if you were one of these children in the vehicle: How would feel seeing your mother and father's lives end so abruptly and violently? And would you consider taking revenge later in life? I sure wouldn't, I'de probably be a bit too scared to stop. If I were one of the children I would probably try my best to fight this. In this instance I would probably try to get the soldiers responsible for this punished by the court.
This based on me not knowing all the details. Title: Re: US Troops Kill Iraqi Civilians Post by: Supernatural Pie on January 21, 2005, 11:35:57 pm If the car didn't stop, even after warning shots, how the fuck were the soldiers supposed to know it wasn't packed with explosives?
Don't jump to conclusions. Title: Re: US Troops Kill Iraqi Civilians Post by: SanitarySal on January 21, 2005, 11:50:26 pm I agree with you snipe how were the Soldiers supposed to know it wasn't packed with explosives. But then what came to my mind was the following:
1 - there are no flares in the street indicating a roadblock. 2 - it is extremely dark, and likely darker when it actually occurred how was the driver to know to stop. 3 - only the soldiers are using night vision and only they know there is a roadblock. 4 - warning shots tend to have the opposite effect (especially in lawless Iraq), when people hear warning shots their first instinct (human instinct) is to run or take cover. 5 - In iraq a driver is worried about two things, edgy soldiers at roadblocks, and carjackers who also fire warning shots. When I was in Iraq there was a roadblock set up in a very similar situation to this, it was dusk, the sky was near black, we had a roadblock set up in the middle of the hiway. with only headlights pointing at oncoming traffic. Each car was being inspected to search for Saddam, because the Army had just received some intel that Saddam was moving. After stopping about 20 cars, many of whom came were hauling ass on the hiway, one came up hauling ass and nearly failed to stop....the soldiers yelled "stop" in english but the car had not yet breaked. There was no time for warning shots...the Commanding officer gave the order "shoot him" and at the very instance the car breaked coming to a screeching stop within feet of the American soldiers manning the roadblock. This driver nearly lost his life, and it was only the hsitancy of some level headed troops who didnt wish to take an innocent life that prevented a murder. The car was searched and they were waved through. MInutes later we packed up and headed back to base with only LUCK saving that driver. Besides Snipe, you didnt answer my two questions, they were: How would feel seeing your mother and father's lives end so abruptly and violently? And would you consider taking revenge later in life? Quote 5 - In iraq a driver is worried about two things, edgy soldiers at roadblocks, and carjackers who also fire warning shots. Sal, Im just curious, what makes you an expert? How can you know exactly what the Iraqi citezens are worried about? Title: Re: US Troops Kill Iraqi Civilians Post by: seth on January 22, 2005, 12:14:31 am How can you know exactly what the Iraqi citezens are worried about? dood, what else should they be worried about ? Title: Re: US Troops Kill Iraqi Civilians Post by: SanitarySal on January 22, 2005, 12:16:44 am What makes me an expert is that I spent 3 months in post-invasion Iraq. And while most of my time was spent on a US military base in Tikrit that came under nightly mortar attack from the Iraqi resistance, i did have significant opportunity to speak with Iraqis, especially Iraqi drivers as there were a fair ammount of Iraqi drivers that came to the base for various business.
My knowledge is primarily obtained from those drivers who expressed to me their perspective and concerns. My experience extends beyond that as well. And would you consider taking revenge later in life? I would most likely be afflicted with severe post traumatic stress disorder, that would reoccur for the rest of my life. I would also experience severe psychopathological disorders, wrought with paranoia and rage. From there I would join the resistance and plot out my martyrdom. |
