Title: What Mac Should I Buy???
Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on January 12, 2005, 05:03:11 pm
Okay, I have a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 that I have to use for work, but I would like to bring in a Mac as well so I can get on GameRanger and talk to people, and also run a few Mac applications like PhotoShop for some general image editing (nothing major).  I'm not going to be playing any games on it really, but I do have a lot of spare time at work that I could spend on it doing other things that I just don't like doing on a PC (like making my military tribute pages).

So, what should I get?  I've never much liked mobile macs (I've had my share of PowerBooks and iBooks, but I won't be bringing it home and to work...it will just be staying at work).  Although if it is the most feasable option, I might consider it.  Also, money is no object....I can spend as much as I want, although I really don't want to go out and buy a high-performance G5 Tower when I won't even be using a fraction of its performance.

lol, is that a rhetorical question? one day after the keynote? heh... clear answer:

Mac mini

i'd get the 1.42Ghz version with larger HD, more RAM and built-in bluetooth (so you can use the bluetooth keyboard and mouse with it which u have to get separate, tho). also you could get a good small TFT screen for it. perfect for your purpose.

Buy the mini mac, use the screen from your pc, and you're set. If you get a wireless keyboard and mouse with it, it'll cost you just about $700. Genius, eh? ::applause::

Godamn you civic, beating me to the punch ::wall::

mac mini - just don't put anything less than a 512MB chip of ram in - 1GB realistic if money isn't a problem.

GS, Mac mini, plus you can hide it from your boss easily. Just get a monitor keyboard mouse switcher between the Mac/PC.

Hmmm....switchbox sounds nice, I hadn't even thought of that.  hehehehe

I like it...I can use my nice keyboard and optical mouse and my 17-inch Flat Panel Display.  Shmexy!

Yes, those guys are right. My set up at home is a 1ghz mac and a 2.8ghz pc that I run off the same Keyboard, mouse and Monitor. All you need is a KVM Switch for about 60 bucks and the mac mini for $599 and your all set.

Plus get a Airport Card with a Airport Express. Might as well be totally wireless in your office.

Off the top of your head, does anybody know a cheap place to get a switchbox from?  Sounds pretty hand, especially when desk space in my dorm room is at an absolute premium.

I also say go with the Mac Mini.  You can go test it out for us and tell us all how sexy it is to use.

You can find them at CompUSA and be sure to get a USB KVM switch, 60 bucks.

Out of curiosity, have you decided yet GS?

No, I'm really debating between the Mac Mini, using the switchbox as suggested with the peripherals of my work PC, or getting a PowerBook/iBook that I could also use for trips and on vacation.  Hard decision.  I'm in no big hurry, so I have time to make an educated decision on this one.

Notebooks as are right now are not the best they could be. I would wait until at least WWDC until a powerbook or iBook purchase would be recommended.

But why not make a new motto GS and say "Why not get both?"

Myst recommendation: 1.42GHz Mac Mini
