Title: An Anoying Trend
Post by: Typhy on January 08, 2005, 06:02:04 am
I may as well begin on the paranoid note. I'm posting this thread in the GG for a reason. I know given the subject, it fits better in the critism section or whatever that is. Just leave it so things can stay pleasent. ;)

Lately, members have been digging back and bringing up old topics from years ago. The worst example of this is Ein, who doesn't only bring back old topics, but brings them back with complete useless remarks on subjects that are long since dead, including BL issues.

The thing that bothers me about this is how it's been mishandled by forum moderators in both the BL and the GG. Do your job, guys. Someone brings back an old thread with a useless post, delete their post, lock the thread if nescessary, and post a warning.

My biggest problem, though, comes with the way Lone-Wolf has handled the thread "Who do you hate most?" Sanitary Sal's post should've been deleted and he should've been issued a warning. I gather from your post that you didn't realize how old the thread was, so I understand your actions up to this point. However, it's like you're fighting against yourself. Since his origonal post, the only posts that have been spam have been posts about locking the thread. BFG, GhostSniper, Bondo and Flies had a nice little debate in this thread. At this point, it was no longer spam. So now you lock it? After it becomes constructive?

Make your decision. You're a moderator. Don't post about how useless the thread is or whatever. If you don't like it, that's why you have the lock and delete buttons

Alright, to sumarize, since I just rambled on for the last few paragraphs:

Don't bring back threads that are long sense dead.

If a thread is brought back, a moderator should deal with it.

If a moderator fails to deal with it for whatever reason, don't lock it once it becomes constructive. You created the problem by making spam posts about locking it.

You're correct Typhy, at the time i posted my first reply i was unaware it had been dug up by Sal.

I didnt think it would be a problem that the thread got locked, since BFG, one of your listed participants in the discussion, asked me/suggested it be locked.  I apologize for not dealing with it immediately, it was my mistake.

If people would like to see it opened up again so the discussion can continue i would be happy to do so, or to move the relevant/recent posts of BFG, GS, Flies, and Bondo to a new thread.  If nobody really cares (no offense, but excluding yourself Typhy) then i'll just let it be and in the future be sure to deal with the thread promptly and quickly.

Again, my apologies.

Putting a note in the Messages from Admins & Moderators thread about bringing back old threads.  Read it there if you want to.

-Lone

EDIT - I put this into the 'Who do you hate the most /like the least' thread as well.  BFG, GS, Flies, or Bondo, if you would like to see the thread re-opened, PM me and i will do so.

Hey I agree with what you said.   I didnt bring that old post out to be spiteful, I truly thought the poll results were funny, especially considering the stated intent of the poll.   I had no idea the guy had a change of heart that would have made the trhead null and void.

There is clearly come spite here which seems to boil over from GameRanger animosities.

I dont know why I would have deserved a warning.   Check yourself first.

ps - i had a few beers, sorry for the spelling errors.

Figure I should mention it here, I think the decision to lock was fine...that discussion was pretty random and didn't merit keeping the thread alive.

I don't know if Sal has a history or if this is an isolated event. There are times when bringing up a dead post can be relevant. The moderator should take it into consideration, perhaps ask the person who brought it up to defend doing so, and if that isn't convincing, go ahead and lock it (deleting the post if it is stopped quickly is a reasonable option.)

No official warning was given.  It was just me telling you that in the future, if you dug up another thread, there would be one.

In response to Bondo's point of threads being brought back for a good reason, I agree.  Currently i left it at nothing for any reason, just to make it crystal clear.

I brought it up in the Admin section, and prior to today (actually quite a while ago) and Mauti expressed that he would like old threads that are re-visited to be left open, only if, as Bondo said, with good reason and relevence.  I for one support the idea, but as i said, for now until all the Admins chip in, i wanted to make things very clear to everybody.

I think letting that thread die now is probably a good idea ;) we had our little light hearted discussion etc etc ;)

I don't mind oldish posts that have something constructive or relevant added to them - say a topic thats a few weeks old but somthing relevant / new info or such like turns up - its quite nice to readdress stuff - but like typhy said when its just reconstituded bs its a bit annoying and i'll be following Lone-Wolf's example in the *BL forum from now!

Well, now that I'm saying it, you have 3 out of the 4 participants saying locking it is fine.  Don't know what Flies take on it is, but hey, he's just an American living abroad, so who cares what he thinks anyways!  lol

It is dead.

Very good job.

-GhostSniper Out.

I think any thread with a post between a few people no matter what it is should be kept, after all, the topic of that particular thread wasn't too serious anyway.

Just don't bring back old posts. Create new ones with new life.

Typhy telling moderators what they should be moderating while everyone else involved doesn't seem to mind. Mb its the sun glare off the Alaskan tundra.

Speak for yourself.  The huge, bold, navy blue font of yours drove me nuts.  Of course now you're going to reply in the biggest font size you can possibly manage just to spite me.  Hmmm.  ::domina::  Bad GS.  Bad.

Oh baby....I rather enjoy a good whip every now and then. ;)

And for the most part, I have left most of my posts in 10pt Navy with no bold.

You know, this thread went off topic so fast it's kind of funny.  Anyhow, let's leave it alone until someone posts something more on-topic.

Oh and dont worry, im responding to your post in the Drop Box right now.

Typhy, if you want to be a GG admin all you have to do is ask. You dont have to take pot shots at current admins.

lol, is it really that easy.

Except for me.  I asked for the job a while back and Mauti told me I was too "controversial" to be a General Gossip admin.  lol[/size]
