Title: How and what exactly is "Gmail"?
Post by: Civrock on October 09, 2004, 12:37:32 am
hey, i see more and more people with these email adresses... and i'm curious. i know that it's the email service from yahoo but... what advantage, possibilities and features do you have there? more than anywhere else? how do you like it?

anyways... i also noticed that you have to get invited to be able to use it. so... could somebody do that, please? i'd like to try it out. :)

Gmail is Google's new email service, with 1000Mb of storage.  I got an invitation from a friend about a week ago, but I don't currently have the power to send invitations or I'd offer you one.

It's nothing special at the moment though.  It doesn't run in Safari for OS X.3, so I have to use Netscape  :( or some other such unimpressive browser.  But the concept is neat and once it goes mainstream I'm sure it will be popular.

I'm not sure why they have the weird invitations system.  My friend got his from a friend who got it from a friend, etc.  I have no idea who the original people were and why they didn't just invite everyone who was interested to sign up.

Ya i heard of it before, and its actually from google not Yahoo.  Its supposed to give you bigger space to store and send emails from, compared to hotmail, etc.   It used to be that anyone could have gotten an account set up when it was in its beta stage, I had no idea that you now need a "hook up/connection".

Loud: I use it in Safari in 10.3.3, with few problems (sometimes the applet doesn't initialize properly, but a refresh fixes it nearly every time). Also, the reason for the invitation system is twofold--first, GMail is still in beta, so the only people using it are "beta testers". Second, I suspect it's to stir interest and hype. Whether that was intentional or not, it did have that effect in the early days of GMail's operations.

It doesn't run in Safari for OS X.3

Um...

Yes it does...

The only problem is that there's a weird loading screen glitch that I get in Safari, but if you refresh it enough, you'll eventually get to your inbox.

Oops, sorry about the typo there - I'm running 10.2, which is what I meant.  Gmail does not work on that version of Safari (1.0.3), for me at least.

I usually only upgrade every other OS anyway...can't wait for Tiger!

Loth - I just think the invite system is oddly set up - they didn't give me an invite when I registered on the email list the very first day it was announced - I only got one when a friend mentioned he had it.  Interest and qualification don't seem very well balanced in the beta testing, and its annoying that they didn't make the system backwards-compatible.

Lol, my ex just switched to gmail and I didn't connect it to google right away though I did when I was clicking on the thread title here. I have no need for a webmail account, I have too many random e-mail accounts that I don't use. Even the one e-mail account I do use generally gets me trash.

Ah, I see, I see. In that case, I agree with your assessment.
