Title: Processor card upgrade
Post by: th.Sentinel on September 24, 2004, 12:06:04 pm
Hi, I'm looking for ppl who did a processor card upgrade on their mac.

I'm thinking of upgrading my B&W G3 to a G4 800Mhz with the Sonnet Zif upgrade.

Has anyone done this before?
And if so, what was the result? Dit it work well? Any problems with other hardware?

I just want some input on it before I go and purchase something that doesn't work properly.

ps: I also know the website xlr8yourmac (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com), just want some experiences

Is this your primary computer? Yes or no I would really take that money and put it twords an imac G5, even if it is the low end imac it will be much faster then a G4 upgrade for your aging G3.

If that isnt something you want to do I would get the 1ghz upgrade for your G3, if you dont you will probably really be kicking yourself after you get the 800mhz upgrade. I know BTs Colin upgraded his G3 with the 1ghz sonnet chip and was very happy with it.

voods

Well I got a dual 2 G5, but I want to use the G3 as a server for hosting games on. I wanted at least 800Mhz so I would be able to host AA from my G3 and play on my G5...

But after making a few phonecalls with the local Apple resellers here, there is no way I can get the Sonnet chip anyway. One store waited 6 months on a chip and it never arrived  :( , and other stores don't even want to order it for me.

Fucking Apple dealers here in Belgium why do we always have to wait so long before we get something... for 300$ I can't buy a new computer. Mb I should just save it for my Powerbook.

Tnx for the advice anyway voodoo

Have you checked eBay or online Apple stores, Sent? Paying for shipping will probably be better than waiting that long.

I'll do that as soon as I get my credit card  ;)

Gonna ask for one tomorrow see what my bank has to tell me. I think its the fastest way too, but the risk a bit bigger and when its broken...

Anyway tnx for the advice guys, I'll see what I will do in the next few days. Mb saving a few more months, dunno yet.

Upgraded an original 350Mhz G4 to a 800Mhz G4 ..... made one hell of a difference (like being able to run X happily) and basicallly kicked a new lease of life into the computer :)
