Title: You wouldn't have passed the 8th grade in Kansas in 1895
Post by: Mr. Lothario on June 28, 2004, 02:25:23 pm
It's interesting how much education has declined in 109 years. 8th Grade Final Exam (http://people.morehead-st.edu/fs/w.willis/eighthgrade.html).

I'm not sure if its declined that much. The education that we receive now simply does not spend a large amount of explaining the intricises[also doesnt teach spelling] of farming. I'm pretty sure that after 8th grade I could have completed most of that. Most. not all.

"2. A wagon box is 2 ft. deep, 10 feet long, and 3 ft. wide. How many bushels of wheat will it hold?"

lol....if that isn't farmer propaganda in schools I don't know what is!

"6. Describe three of the most prominent battles of the Rebellion."

Wow, I didn't realize they were still calling the Civil War the "Rebellion" as late as 1895.

Hey, it's Kansas. The farming mode of thought must have been as common to them as the automobile mode of thought is to modern eighth-graders.

It's interesting to see how much more practical skills were emphasized back in 1895. These days schools seem to focus more on abstract concepts and theory behind things.

I'm also fairly confident I would have passed this test back in 8th grade. Excepting the strait memorization parts, I've never really been good at memorization.

I would have passed that. It's just as difficult stuff, just different subjects.

Books and school and such were all they had back then. So, not suprisingly, they had to learn a lot. Today everything is influenced by the media and such.

Well, I just wanna state again the fact that this is all same difficultly level we have, they just focused on different parts of the child's education.

it is rather simple, just geared towards farming as has been said before.
for example

What is the cost of a square farm at $15 per are, the distance around which is 640 rods?

would translate to

What is the cost of a square farm at $15 per are, if the perimeter is 640 rods?

let's see here, it's square, so divide by 4

that leaves us with a 160 square rod farm

rods to  acres is a 160 to 1 ratio

so we have 1 acre

40.4 ares per acre that multiplied by 15 and we get a final answer of 67 dollars and 20 cents

this whole test is nothing more than an excercise in memorization and regurgitation.
here it's conversion factors
