Title: Should I upgrade? Post by: one needs help on June 02, 2004, 12:54:34 am Alright, my uncle is bringing down this PowerMac G3 he found in the streets of Boston...no clue why he picked it up, but w/e. Anyways, the only thing I know is that the G3 is 350mhz and the case seems to be in "good" quality - it's a Black and white G3 btw. As I was saying, should I upgrade this machine to G4 1ghz and an ATI radeon 7000 PCI 128mb graphics card(that's about $500)? I'm not really sure what to do, we're on a tight budget, so no I won't buy an eMac. Currently, I'm leaning on a PC...but god knows I don't want to go to a PC...but this iMac 400mhz really sucks.
Sincerely, oNe PS- the $500 part is both the processor and video upgrade combined. [PS added to one's post at his request. Ace] Title: Re:Should I upgrade? Post by: Ace on June 02, 2004, 05:00:09 am This depends on what you want to use the machine for. First, I would upgrade the GPU no matter what. Grab a 64 MB PCI Radeon 7000 on eBay for ~$75. This will run Quartz Extreme and will meet the low end requirements for most games. With not having an AGP slot, it's the best you can do. Then, if you want to game, drop $400 on a 1 GHz G4. If not, spend $200 on a 800 GHz G3. Combined with the Radeon, the G3 should be more than adequate for everyday use in Panther. If you do go the gaming route, realize that in a year you probably won't be meeting most minimum specs anymore.
