If it is... ;D Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Mr. Lothario on May 27, 2004, 12:21:25 pm I have noticed a hefty slowdown in CoD since I installed the update, including occasional freezes during action. Beware.
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 27, 2004, 01:55:07 pm What Graphics card loth??
Ive noticed very little change in anything so far... GhR dosn't seem different - i would test it with everything else but since the HD Died.. :o i think somebody upstairs is kicking me in the nuts for the fun of it :( Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Mr. Lothario on May 27, 2004, 02:13:12 pm 64MB GeForce 4 MX.
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 27, 2004, 03:23:27 pm ...exactly the same as me. hmm
with GL updates i usually use the iTunes Visualizer on fullscreen to see what inproment if any there is... just did it now and well... it wasn't great - certainly not better. Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: KoS.Rebel on May 27, 2004, 03:58:55 pm They got our hopes up but yet again we were let down. Next time they say increased openGL they better mean "You will get constant 100 fps". ;D
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: *DAMN Elandrion on May 27, 2004, 06:59:39 pm take a look at xlr8yourmac.com (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com); some people seem to experience slowdowns in UT2k4 too...
maybe doing some benchs would help Elandrion Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Mr.Mellow on May 27, 2004, 08:09:44 pm Hmm, on InsideMacGames.com, they said that it should increase performance in CoD. I've noticed a little bit of change, but maybe it only helps the lower end machines like mine. Hmm.
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 27, 2004, 10:09:29 pm **
10.3.4 includes a new OpenGL feature called "vertex buffer objects" or VBO for short. It's essentially a method of storing vertex data directly on the video card to eliminate CPU overhead. Apple had implemented a similar extension in the past, called "vertex array range" (VAR) that was essentially a reworking of the Nvidia extension of a similar name. The main difference between VBO and VAR (aside from the API looking fairly different) is that VBO is a cross-platform, ARB-approved way of achieving the same speed-up ** Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Mr. Lothario on May 27, 2004, 11:53:03 pm Mellow, I'm on a 733 G4 with 768 MB of RAM. In terms of games, it doesn't get much more low-end.
Interesting, BFG. Where'd you find that? Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BTs_Lee.Harvey on May 28, 2004, 04:35:30 am welll.. updated to 10.3.4 and now the g5 no longer can tell that my EZQuest 52x cd-rw drive is connected to the firewire.. all it thinks is that there is something connected but it cant tell what.. it worked last week in 10.3.3...... they do this to that drive everyother update
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 28, 2004, 01:32:46 pm Loth its from xlr8yourmac. Very interesting.
Was in Uni thismorning, mate of mine who has a 15inch G4 powerbook updated last night... he's getting some pretty damn horrific screen shit - not sure if the drivers disagree with his Graphics card or what - but the screen isn't refreshing properly and its leaving artifacts accross 90% of the screen. Hes had this probem before - but it was only about 5% and used to disapear after a few minutes... On another note i have found after launching AA up post update - that well its fooked. textures are not showing properly - everything is blocky and im getting weird light artifacts not rendering at all...its horrible! Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Supernatural Pie on May 28, 2004, 09:48:14 pm Mellow, I'm on a 733 G4 with 768 MB of RAM. In terms of games, it doesn't get much more low-end. Ahem. 700 G4 with 640 MB or RAM. Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: cO.gabe on May 28, 2004, 09:56:04 pm So here is the question:
Update now or wait for the next update? (I don't want it to fuck up my CoD... I would be pissed) Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Mr.Grey on May 28, 2004, 10:10:24 pm i like panthers `expose sorting program dats badass.... if im watchin porn just hit F11 and bam it goes off screen gawd i luv it ;D
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 28, 2004, 10:10:35 pm Just tried CoD - Its running sweet as anything. No problems, no decrease in framerates that i can notice - i wouldn't worry about updating :)
(ps. 1Ghz G4 (x2) - 1GB ram Geforce4mx) Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: [[EUR]] HoloGram on May 29, 2004, 12:15:47 am Today I installed CoD Demo on my G5 1.8 with 1,5 Gig RAM and OSX 10.3.4.
The Demo runs like shit. Dunno why , maybe its the 10.3.4. No matter what resolution is used. or waht Settings. It is not playble... FPS like 10-20 in lowaction scenes. Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 29, 2004, 02:20:48 am Its weird how varied the feedback is - everything from people saying its sucked the life out of their computer, to people saying its as if someone gave their computer a kick up the ass!

And then you have people like me who see no difference what so ever. 1.8GHz Single-G5, 2.5GB RAM, ATi Radeon 9600 Pro 64MB. Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 29, 2004, 03:42:00 pm This is really weird. Just had a phone call from my mate with the 15inch TiBook and the dodgey screen - he's turned the laptop on thismorning and the whole screen is totally scrambed. However when he launchs QIII it runs beautifully - he reckons he's even getting higher FPS than before. Soon as he quits though the screen screws up again.
that really is weird. Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: .vooDoo. on May 29, 2004, 04:51:38 pm Man, Apple should insead of seeding the new OS's to developers they should seed it to everyday people like us so that we can test how it works. Shit, I think that some of the kids on this site test better then the Dev's can.
Oh, and also, I have seen improved game perfomance in both RvS and CoD. Also less lag bubbles when in close combat. Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 29, 2004, 05:32:33 pm Yep i have noticed with CoD That i no longer get that meltdown processor grind that i had beofre (like the start of the russian campain just after you get of the boat)... its all fluid now and very smexy :)
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: Mr.Grey on May 29, 2004, 10:06:09 pm well not much things help in the new update the list looks interesting and cool but the benifits dont have all that much :)
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: KGB on May 30, 2004, 12:59:39 am Since I installed the new update I have noticed that my g4 has a hell of a hard time starting up.
Normally it takes +- 25 sec,now it takes 2 to 3 min to start up normally ??? WTF is wrong here ? Did apple turn my g4 into a pentium 4 >:( >:( >:( >:( Wack wack wack Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 30, 2004, 12:15:52 pm Hmm. did you find that it took a while for the computer to load the desktop? I havn't started the comp since the update but just sitting down this morning it sure did seem to take a while...
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: KGB on May 30, 2004, 05:58:17 pm Yop, building the desktop takes ages now + I get the damn wheel of death while i wait.
Title: Re:Mac OS X 10.3.4 released Post by: BFG on May 31, 2004, 01:35:23 pm Hmm wonder if it was rebuilding the desktop. - i did a couple of restarts, and each time it got faster - seems to be back to about normal time now! :)
