Post by: |MP|Nomad on May 05, 2004, 03:54:40 pm
Well folks, Apple announced today its new soon to be released OS 10.4 Tiger today, and will be shown at the WWDC 2004.  Here's the Link OS X.4 Tiger (http://developer.apple.com/wwdc/)  and you can also see more info at IMG (http://www.insidemacgames.com/).

Don't you think eventually Apple is gonna run out of animals to keep naming its new OS's?

Well, I think its cool that Apple is making Tiger. But I don't like it how they are going to announce it so quickly.  Besides, I bet you the OS will only operate on G4 1.25Ghz to G5 proccessors. Now here is the "codenames" of each OS:

10: X
10.1: X1 (I think)
10.2: Jaguar
10.3: Panther

Blitz 8)

10.1 was Cheetah Blitz.. didn't realise 10.0 was simply X though heh.

10.0 - Cheetah
10.1 - Puma
10.2 - Jaguar
10.3 - Panther
10.4 - Tiger

I don't know if the Public Beta had a different cat name or just went with Cheetah.

Actually, you are all wrong.....

10.0 was "Cyan" and was then renamed "Cheetah"

10.1 was Puma

10.2 was Jaguar

10.2 Server was Tigger

10.3 was Panther

10.4 is Tiger

And there you have it (and all of you thought I only payed attention to Political History!).

I think its rediculous that they are coming out with 10.4 so quickly.  I can't afford to keep updating OSs like this.  Fuck Apple.

Um why? Dont then!! I think its fantastic they are constantly updating and inproving the system. Its such a fundamental part of the OS and there is so much change and inproment going on in the technologies involved, why not keep it upto date?

Hell id prefer that than wait another 3years or so so i can run some sort of Cow on my PC

Does anyone know if its really going to be worth it to update to 10.4? And I agree, this is quite quickly. I suppose I'll just wait until the fall until I can buy it hella cheap at college. Sweet!

Well lets look at the previouse upgrades...

 Mac OS X has seen four major releases: 10.0 ( Cheetah", March 24, 2001), 10.1 ("Puma", September 29, 2001), 10.2 ("Jaguar", August 13, 2002), and 10.3 ("Panther", October 24, 2003).

10.0 ---> 10.1
Absolutly huge speed inproments. enharced system performance, cd burning from finder, DVD video playback, massive updates to Open GL, big applescript inprovements and much more

10.1 ---> 10.2  This upgrade introduced us To Quarz Extreame - a fantastic bit of tech, inkwell, huge updated sharing services and compatability with windows boxs, big security updates, and Huge Performace inproments.

10.2 ---> 10.3 Fundermental changes in the way the finder works. a great inprovment in my opinion. Big changes to Aqua. Massive speed inprovments, and security and stability. Tech updates, Application updates.

So going by their previous track record... Im quite a happy chap and looking forward to hearing what they have instore for us with 10.4

The update to quickly?  ???
10.3 came out in octobre, Jobs is going to announce 10.4 at the end of june. Announcing it doesn't make it to be in the stores then. And even if they are releasing it begin of july its still 7-8 months in between I think they had time enough to develop some new goodies and some other well tought of new apps and foundations.

Lets hope for the best and see what Apple has in mind for our lives :)

I admit it seems like 10.4 is coming a little too fast but I also agree that Apple should if its going to improve our already exisiting OS.  Although, I am a little worried that some of my new apps won't run on 10.4.  One app in particular that that I use, the company had to revamp their whole app and make a patch twice so it will finally run on Panther, so now I am a little hesitant.

I know it's been said before, but I'd like to reiterate that there is no reason to upgrade unless you have need (or want) of the features given. It's not like these are essential security upgrades or anything. Standard engineering rules apply here: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." And if you're happy with what you have now and don't need to upgrade yet, don't.

Very true... Although if you want to squeeze a bit more power out of your system i have found each and every upgrade both more powerfull, responsive, and stable :)
