Title: 65-nm G5 chips!? Post by: BFG on January 18, 2004, 02:34:38 pm Quote Team Xbox claims that IBM will be producing 65-nm chips for the upcoming "Xbox 2" and start delivering commercial parts in the next 12-18 months. In November, Microsoft and IBM announced that the future Xbox would utilize IBM processors. Few details had been available. IBM produces the PowerPC 970 for Apple's PowerMac G5 which were introduced at a 130nm process. Recently introduced Xserve G5s now utilize a 90nm process. Reducing the process size should allow future chips to reach higher speeds and potentially less heat production. that is one mother of a jump from 130 to (or even 90) down to 65nm... shit think of the clock speeds they could reach at 65!!! ;D Title: Re:65-nm G5 chips!? Post by: kami on January 18, 2004, 03:50:32 pm 2005 the earliest, so it's a while 'til then. I don't think MS would actually consider using a top of the line 64-bit PPC processor for their xbox, it'd be one hell of a jump from their older one and it'd be one hell of an expensive machine, hardly competitive.

As for 65nm, early 2005 is reasonable, 90nm will be great for the 3Ghz+ WWDC G5. Title: Re:65-nm G5 chips!? Post by: kami on January 18, 2004, 11:04:43 pm Heh, well perhaps I just don't want those MS bastards to get their dirty hands on that fine piece of 64-bit G5 ass... ;)
