Title: Who Makes the World's Best Airplanes?
Post by: BTs_GhostSniper on December 30, 2003, 12:13:34 am
I only included aircraft manufacturers that make both civilian and military combat aircraft.

My pick goes to Boeing.....they make the finest airlifters I have ever had the pleasure of jumping out of :)

I like Boeing too, here's a site I came across a while back with some interesting Boeing aircraft in action. http://www.boeing.com/companyoffices/gallery/video/

Why are you in this and the other thread only listing american companys? (might be wrong here, im no expert in aircraft manufacturing - but they all sound american, cept the israeli ofcourse)

Somehow i get the picture of you Ghost that your MOS is "Internet propaganda specialist"  ;D

Fine your proud of your country, cool. You dont need say it over and over and over and over.

PS. not an attempt to start another anti usa flame, just find this post 9/11 patriotism annoying, acctually nevermind this whole post. I should probably just delete it...I'll flip coin about it...

PS. I think Patria makes the best planes, even if its under a licence  ;)

Well, the world's finest miltary aircraft (barring the Eurofighter Typhoon) are American.

Also, you obviously didn't look well because there are four non-American choices on the board (three European and one Israeli) - EADS (makers of the Eurofighter and the Airbus Consortium), Dassault (I believe they make the Mirage warfighter), IAI (doesn't make any combat aircraft), and Fairchild Dornier (which I believe is no longer operational)

Northrop. God bless stealth; though I also admire the Boeings--sexy bastards that they are. But still, I would give my vote to the U.S. Army, or whoever makes their planes.

This is a tough one.

I'm a big fan of the F-14, but she's an old beast these days.

I'm crazy for the Hog - good ole A-10, but she's an old girl too.  Fairchild made them.

But, the best bird is the new, still virgin-cherried F-22. Glory, for us to behold.

My vote is for Lockheed Martin because of the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 JSF. If Stealth wasn't old technology, the vote would be for Northrop Grumman.

wright brothers.

I would have to disagree. As you may have seen on the December 17th re-enactment of the Flyer, the world found out that without a nice wind, their plane wasn't all that amazing. Though I still completely respect them for all of their research and discoveries, yada yada, you can't say that they made the world's best plane.  :-X

I am insulted that the Sukhoi Beurau is not in this one! They make excellent combat aircraft and are the proud makers of the most manuverable combat fighter in the world the SU-35 and I think one of their subsidiaries makes civilian aircraft (they made an S-80 transport plane but spend most of their effort in the military field. You know NATO nations arent the only folks with good aviation.

Here are some specs on this link http://www.sci.fi/~fta/Su-27.htm (http://www.sci.fi/~fta/Su-27.htm)

We could also get into helicopters and how Mil and Antonov beuraus made some fantastic transport helicopters (even made a working chinook like chopper before Sikorski made his first helicopter for the West).

where are all the russian plane manufacturers like Suchoj, MiG, Illuschin? I believe that their planes are at least as good as their western counterparts. E.g. Suchoi makes some of the best air fighters, while on the other hand making aerobatics planes. I like them because the russians are masters of improvisation and engineering.

<edit:> hmm I also forgot about Atlas, a South African plane manufacturer, but I don't know if they make civilian planes too.

Now correct me if im very wrong (which i probably am) but wern't both boeing and Lockheed martin both originals british companies?

ps... bet you didn't know that a boeing 747-400  would set you back between 185 and 211 million dollars!

I only listed manufacturers who currently build both military and civilian aircraft.  None of the Russian aircraft manufacturers listed currently make both.

Suchoj does. Military: SU-35, SU-37 (and many others). Civilian: SU-80 (multi-purpose aircraft, version SU-80GP is a passenger plane, SU-80M: ambulance plane), SU-29 (two-seated aerobatics plane). (info from this german page (http://www.suchoj.com))

edit: another Suchoj-built passenger plane: the RRJ (http://www.suchoj.com/ab1953/RRJ/home.shtml)

Oh hell, forgot they don't spell it Sukhoi in the rest of the world.....lol.  Yes, they do make both, and I may have listed Mikoyan-Gurevich, Sukhoi, Tupolev, and Mitsubishi if I had the room (the poll feature only lets you list so many).  So I threw in the ones that came to mind first.

Ummmm, No.  William Boeing was an American and founded Pacific Aero in 1916, and changed its name to Boeing in 1917.  Glenn Martin founded the Glenn Martin Company in 1912 and Lockheed was formed by Allen Loughead in 1926.  The two companies merged in 1995.  All parties involved were Americans.

its not spam, its general gossip. an interesting topic too. both his polls were. people like cars, people like planes, people have alot to say about them. general gossip, not spam. btw, my brother is in college for aviation, transfering from FIT to a more local SUNY college (buffalo or binghampton). hes looking to do commercial piloting, so i reckon he'll work his way to piloting the big boeing 747s. any input on a good SUNY school with a strong aviation program?

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, FL.  I took several classes from there towards one of my degrees.  Commercial Airlines are pretty rough on new pilots.  Both my uncle and my father got their private pilots licenses in the early 1970s--my uncle joined United Airlines and my dad joined the U.S. Air Force.  Now my uncle is a command pilot on 747s and makes over $300,000 a year making 3 flights non-stop from Denver, CO, to Tokyo, Japan, a month (grossly over-paid if you ask me).

Hey Ghost, I've been thinking about getting a pilot's liscence for some time now. You know how much classes cost. I am not talking about a commericial liscence, but one to pilot a little old cessna.

You will spend between $2,500 and $3,000 minimum to get your private pilot's license.  That will pretty much cover it if you find an instructor pilot and don't go through a school.  Going through a school can cost much much more, and I don't generally recommend it.

w00t A-10 all the way!
I am also a Big fan of Rutan Aircraft...I got to fly a Variezie. Which is about the closest thing a civilian can get to an F-16...
