Title: Lazy Links, How Do You Make Them?
Post by: |MP|Nomad on November 08, 2003, 03:57:00 pm
Hey Fellas,
I always wanted to learn how to make lazy links, can anyone tell me??  I know Lothario and Bucc and Jeb have used them b4, but how exactly do you do them?  I know that you have to type a specific way, but which way is that?  Also, is this specific way universal?  So that if I go to another forum and want to make a lazy link, it will work, or does every forum have their own specific code??

BTW, for those who do not know, a lazy link is when you don''t copy and past an entire URL link but instead create a named hyperlink (maybe 1 word or 2) which then after clicking on it directs you to the URL you want them to see.  THANKS A BUNCH!!

for most forums you do this:

Code:
[url=http://whatever.your.site.is.here.com]Insert your text here[/url]

example:

Check out the new c| forums! (http://www.thecollectiveclan.com/forum)

looks like this

Code:
[url=http://www.thecollectiveclan.com/forum/]Check out the new c| forums![/url]

Well the text came up with it being hyperlinked, but when I click on the link, it gives me an error and I know that its the right URL.

     Since Noms was too lazy to find out the real term.

No I have seen it on the apple website on the discussion forums.  Some guy posted a lazy link and he referred to it as a lazy link, so I assumed that is what it was called.  Is it not?

     Well, it's a perfectly descriptive term, and I don't think anybody would bitchslap you for using it, but the actual term that has the Geek Seal of Approval? is "hyperlink".

Anything clickable is a hyperlink.

So if I have http://mp.macclans.com that shows up as a hyperlink.  And if I present it as Click Here! (http://mp.macclans.com) it's just changed to "prettier" text.

The difference is that apps (usually web apps) like this, didn't always convert the http://mp.macclans.com to a hyperlink.  It would leave it as plain text, and you'd have to copy and paste it into the address field of your browser.  But now most browsers and apps can see www.apple.com and automatically make it a link (hyperlink).

I've never heard it called lazy link either though.  People just used to bitch to put the link in, not the text.

Hey fellas,

I have another question.  Can I use Lazy Links (yes I have now set the presidence, we will now call them Lazy Links  :)) in emails?

For instance, I use Entourage, so if I am sending an email to someone, say, describing a product which I know has a URL to go and view it, can I use a lazy link in the body of text of my email and presto!! have it hyperlinked (ahh, I mean Lazy Linked  ;))?

     In the case of e-mail, it depends on the software and settings of the recipient. If they have their client set to open all e-mails as plain text, then your link probably won't be hyper. But most people don't have that set, so it'll work in most cases. In an e-mail, you can also use HTML formatting to make the link look purdy.
Code:
<a href="http://www.barelylegalnomad.com">Check out this hot new pr0n site!</href>
 That will create a hyperlink which reads "Check out this hot new pr0n site!" and leads to barelylegalnomad.com.

or you can insert great pictures like this:

Code:
<img src="http://www.redcoat.net/pics/tubgirl.jpg">

note: don't click that link under any circumstances

Hey Loth,

I tried it and it didn't work.  I made sure I selected HTML and not plain text and it did hyperlink the http://www.barelylegalnomad.com part, but it did not appear with the lazy hyperlink, Check out this hot new pr0n site!

Thoughts?

     Ah, that's because it's been too long since I've used HTML and I got it wrong. The proper syntax is to close with </a>. <a href="url goes here">Text of the link goes here</a>.

Nope, I still get the URL to get hyperlinked (in HTML) but the text stays simply text and not hyperlinked.

I type it exactly as shown below, including the <>

ie.   <a href="http://www.lothariolovesthongs.com">I love this bigtime</a>

Help?  ???

     Are you sending the e-mail to yourself to look at it? Links aren't highlighted while writing e-mails, only while receiving them.

Yes I am sending them to myself, but I am not looking at the sent folder I look at the inbox folder where the actual email comes.  And again it doesn't work.  What I will try is send an email to myself (personal email) using my kosnomad@rogers.com email.  Will it work then do you think?  But in theory it should still work using one of those emails, sent and recieved, no?

     Hmm. It should work, yeah. Check your prefs, my guess would be that you've got HTML e-mails disabled.

Hey Loth,

1st lemme say thanks for all the hassle at replying back buddy.  I still haven't found a solution, I went to pref in Entourage and they don't have anything on HTML, it is only an option to choose from in the compose window when making a new email (clickable icon).

So I will continue to simply copy and paste the entire URL, until I can find a solution.  Thanks buddy
 :)
