Title: 970s CONFIRMED FOR WWDC
Post by: alaric on June 12, 2003, 08:59:47 pm
I have it on VERY GOOD authority that the new Apple processor known as the 970 or G5 will be released on June 23rd at the World Wide Developers Conference.

I did not get this confirmation from a rumors site, but rather recieved it from a high-level apple connection of mine.

Also, the next major release of OSX is supposed to be "something very special" and will also be announced at the WWDC.

So hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen, this is gonna be one helluva ride! ;D ;D ;D

If I had a nickel everytime i read those words I would be as rich as Bill Gates. But hell, we all need to have soem faith Apple might turn around and completly shock us for once.

Who knows, maybe this will eb as big as the first iMac.

YAY! 64-bit!

So in either case, your "high-level apple connection" is an unverified source which would then turn your G5 post into a rumor. :)  I love the new rumor over at www.macrumors.com about the G5 not being released at WWDC.  I have a feeling that it will only be a demo version running a demo of Panther.

Panther, the only thing that is going to be special about it is the fact that it will be optimized for a 64 bit processor, PPC 970.

The chances of the 970s not being ready for WWDC are as likely as Bill Gates becoming a homeless person.

I say this  mainly because WWDC was bumped back earllier this year. They must have had a good reason. and don't say Panther is the reason cause that has long since been ruled out by all of the rumor sites covering this.

Maybe it's an unverified source for you but it sure isn't for me... ;D

The rumors site are abuzz right now. But for OSX, some of them say OSX won't have full support of the 64-bit chips until September when they "say" a new version(probably panthar) will have full support for the 64 bit chips.  And the proc. speeds will be around 1.2ghz,1.4ghz and 1.6ghz.

Don't expect 970 powerbooks till January 2004

I really don't understand why we all are looking negitivly at the OSside of this, it just doesn't seem like Apple not to have the 64-bit version of the OS wotking by then. Most peopel think they will acually have 970 PB chips by the holiday season. Quite the xmas present 'tisn't it?

the nice thing about the 970 is that the chips cost 30% less than the latest G4 chips moto uses. The price of a 1.25ghz G4 chip in bulk of 10,000 was around 475$ (you could get two 3ghz intel chips and more for the same amount). Apple probably gets them for a bit cheaper, but seeing as the towers are dual processor probably about 500$ or more is exclusive the the g4 chips. So hopefully we will see cheaper tower prices with the 970s.

It's too bad they don't run cooler than the current 1GHz G4 chip in the PoweBooks.

The real question is, will the run up to par? Keep in mind this is their first round out on the market, so there might be some harware glitches.

So, who here (If you intend to buy a new comp soon) will get a 970 during its first release?

I think I will, but I'll wait and see what other people say before I buy one myself.

I'm buying one the absolute first second I can. This 450 G4 just isn't cutting it anymore. And if this revision sucks, I can always sell it and get the next one for only a couple hundred dollar loss.

If they come out w/ a 970 PB I'll be sure to get one.

Depends on specs and graphic cards available but probably I'll wait for the first revision/speed bumps before I spend my hard earned money on a new Mac as long I'll get along with my outdated iMac.

Bye,

Mauti

I think I'll wait for the first revision and speed bumps like Mauti said.  Theres rumors going around that the nvidia fx 5800 is coming to mac in the next months or so...

well, if i want to even have a chance at america's army or raven shield, i will have to upgrade. i'll probably do it when panther rolls around, because i figure b then they chould have alot of the bugs ironed out, or arleast ready to be fixed. either that or i'll wait till the latest OMFG GOT TO HAVE IT vidieo card comes out
