Heh, well with Doom3, ID software will have pushed the outer frontier a long way when it comes to ultra realistic games. It's a truly amazing game but -unfortunately- it'll require a  truly amazing computer if you want to play it on the higher settings...

A friend of mine has it, its a alpha copy of it, which is really rough. Its been on the net for a few months. Slashdot had a story that pointed to ATI for leaking the copy onto the net. So they could show off how the game runs on their cards. Anyhow he has a Athlon 2.4ghz, 512megs of ram, and a GeforceFX and it runs like shit.
Aparently microsoft is trying to get ID to hold the release of the game till a xbox version is ready.

The reason Carmack makes engines that require such insane systems at their release is partially because he knows that the engine is going to be around for a long time and hardware will catch up. I mean, look at the Q3 engine for example. That's been licensed for tons of games because Carmack is an engine god. He designed it with a long-term future in mind and it shows.

BTW, the leaked alpha is just that, an alpha. Speed optimizations are one of the last things done to an engine. Consider that when calling it slow.

To reply to Jeb's statement I woulzdnt doubt that Microsoft would have their grubby hands in on the deal.  It seems any way they can screw everyone else out of it to get it first they will.  I think the pure business and ethical sense went out of Microsoft right after they stopped specializing in Flight simulators back in the early 80's.  But then again ethics and business are hardly hand in hand anymore.

Fuck Microsoft, they gobbled up Bungie 3 years ago :-(

On a side note, I've heard something about a new translucent PC that has looks almost like a Mac.

And, there'll be a new microsoft os codenamed "longhorn"

I dunno, found em' on a website

Longhorn won't come out until sometime around 2005 one.  Panther is going to own XP.

'Longhorn' has got this fantastic gay touch to its name, don't you agree?

Moreover, another Microsoft OS will be released by 2008, code-named 'Blackcomb'.

I doubt it will take Microsoft another 5 years to make a new OS.

Back on topic...Doom 3 looks great, but I believe the new HL2 graphics engine has blown it out of the water.

Isn't longhorn based off NT?
I've heard that the next windows release will be "Windows UX" aka "user experience"
btw if you've seen some of the longhorn screenshots, its interesting to see how hard they are trying to be like macosX.

That's good enough for me!  I'm always open to changes.
