Title: Mac's not using OS9 anymore
Post by: Saberian 3000 on May 10, 2003, 12:03:43 am
I am concerned about OS9 not being used anymore.  I mean i know OS9 is outdated in comparison but there are still so many games out there that are using OS9 specifically.  like for example Rogue Spear.  Anyway, let me know what you guys think about the new compps not coming with OS9 anymore.  Will this be the end of games like RS?  i hope not.  hopefully they do something about it soon......

You've had 2 god damn years to get osX. If apple wants to be sucessful in commiting developers to osX, it won't let a legacy os like os9 linger around. Apple isn't going to allow new macs to run os9 to pleasure the 4 people who still play RS. No one who is going to be buying a new Mac will care about being able to run a 2.5 year old game. But, with the speed of the new towers it would be fairly easy to run RS in classic.

maybe dump OSX, and install OS9 on the new computers.  I mean, is it possible?  That'd be the perfect answer!  Dump the system(You'll have the CD's for it anyways) and install a new one!  Question is, can it be done?

As far as I know, the new computers literally will not boot up in 9. Even if 9 was the only OS on the machine, they would not boot up. 'Course, you can always test it. Install 9 on another hard drive, remove your OS X drive, install the 9 drive, and try to boot.

That's just idiotic, if you're getting a new computer you WON'T be playing RS on it, if you still want to play RS you can do it on your old comp.

First off, I bet these new comps play RS faster in classic than your old comp will in native OS 9. (Disclaimer: I'm assuming your "old" computer is at least a year and a half to two years older.)

Second, the reason the new Macs won't boot into OS 9 is because of the boot ROM. With enough hacking, you could probably put together a working boot ROM, in which case I have no reason to believe they wouldn't run OS 9 just fine.

Well, because of my outdated computer (266MHZ PowerBook G3, So old, it even has a ADB port!!! :o ), I only use OS9, because the computer is not fast enough and does not have enough ram to run OSX, so, If I get a better computer in the future with OSX, I would still want OS9, because there is alot of software that only runs on OS9, such as Rogue Spear.

Oh I have had OSx for quite some time now.  I am not concerned with that as an issue for me cause I do agree that OSx is a much better platform for Mac's.  I guess ym concern was for RS because it is still such a popular game.  Again I like RS but I love my ghost reocn cause it is OSX native and I only use X really now.  It just sux cause by not either changing the format of the game for OSX it is gonna kill the game for everyone that plays.  And there are still some hardcore players that play RS.  i am just thinking about the community when i wrote this.  OSX is better but these computer companies should make an OSX version of the game so that Mac can get with the future of gaming and not have a game that cannot be played on an OS9 only comp.
