     Here's what happens: when I'm very relaxed, like when I'm trying to fall asleep or almost asleep, if I hear a loud, unexpected noise, I see a flash of color and/or patterns. The color and the pattern appear to be random, although metallic noises are often accompanied by a checkerboard-style pattern. So anyway, I've mentioned this to people, and so far, I'm the only person I've met who has this strange aural-visual short-circuit. So, does this happen to anybody else here?

Nope, but i bet to some degree everyone experiences something like that.  its probably just how the motor units are firing from motor cortex to the periphery at times of response stimulus (ie. noise).  No biggy, just relax.

     Ah, it doesn't worry me. It's just interesting and it seems to be highly unusual, so I'd like to find out if it is unique or not.

i get something similar to that loth. if i lay in one position for a while, it feels like someone is rocking my bed back and forth. its kinda wierd. i get lots of wierd things going on like twitchy eyes and chills in 90 degree weather. i think it's long term dramamine effects  ;D

Sounds like what you get if you rub your eyes too much or stare into the sun. I don't get anything like this though since I'm not a freak. Try to ignore it or just make sure to get drunk before you go to bed.

     Yeah, it's kind of like that, Tasty. I hadn't thought of that analogy. BTW, this has always happened, as far back as I can remember. It just didn't occur to me until a few years ago that it might be unusual. Turns out it is. : D

Actually, I've experienced this exact same thing for as long as I can remember.  Like you said, it occurs when there's a loud, sudden noise when I'm trying to sleep (a door slamming, my sister yelling, etc).  I see a brief flash of white, usually, and there is sometimes a ringing in my ears.  Imagine getting flashbanged in your sleep, it's kinda like that  ;D.

I never really considered that others don't experience this...I'm not as freakish as Lothario, though, as I have yet to see any checkerboard patterns   :)

Loth, No, that does not happen to me, but Yes, i have heard of this condition and it has a name, ill find out later from my father the doctor.

I get that checkerboard thing if I press really hard on my eyeballs outside of my eyelids... Maybe that rapist has you eyefolded so the textile presses against your eyeballs?
