I suggest we boycott premium members!!! Vent here!!! Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: *DAMN Mauti on February 21, 2003, 11:14:00 pm Why boycott premium users!? Colin you haven't lost any features. You just pay for some additional features if you want them.

Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: The Ghost of Bondo on February 22, 2003, 12:26:42 am Hmm, some of the features are useful, but not $50/year useful. Anyone actually thinking about getting this?
Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: [DEA] fire::fly on February 22, 2003, 01:06:43 am one word:
BOO!!!!! Gameranger doesnt work as it is. Why would i pay 50 bucks just to have a bigger icon? If there was a gameranger that didnt crash midgame, postgame, and pregame, and users could join in the first 15 attempts, then maybe i'd pay something. At most $10. This is a joke. Evill must have upgraded his brand of crack. again, BOO!!!!! Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: BTs_Colin on February 22, 2003, 01:10:35 am For comparison: GameSpy Arcade subscribers get this for $20 USD
In-Game Voice Chat Subscribers can use Arcade's voice chat even after launching a peer-to-peer or parlor game! Ad-free Gaming Subscribers never see banners or full-screen ads in Arcade, 3D or Roger Wilco. Instant Game Patches No lines. No waiting. Just game patches and updates the second you need them. Custom Portraits Ditch the plain brown wrapper - make and upload your own Arcade player portrait. Unlimited Buddy List Make space for your whole clan -- add unlimited buddies to your PlayerSpy buddy list. Unlimited File Transfers Buddy got a file you need right away? Have ?em send it to you through PlayerSpy! GameSpy3D and RogerWilco Full Versions Subscribers get access to all of the subscriber benefits in GameSpy 3D and Roger Wilco -- 3 products for 1 low price! GR users get this for $50 USD: 64 x 64 icon, drop shadow and bold name, auto away message, chatrooms, a private chat room. sounds like an awesome deal I've been on GR longer then many. If anyone comes and tell me I should pay just to support GR they are wrong. This is a travesty. Evill really does know that this isn't worth the money. He compared it to .Mac in chat. I'd be glad to pay as soon as it offers even a portion of what it should. I use GR for games not to chat. This Premium service badly needs repricing ($20 USD seems resonable for an icon/chatroom) or some additional services offered. I'd like to see ingame voice chat (not nessesarily file transfers due to warez although maybe a size limit to allow mods and such to be sent) or perhaps an offical way of implementing clans built in. That would be sweet. Again I'd love to support GR. I have purchased products advertised on their banners. I clicked their banners sometimes just to make Evill feel better. I will not be blatently taken advantage of especcially if you consider the alternatives. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: EUR_Zaitsev on February 22, 2003, 01:43:07 am Well Im not very high tech so I dont care for all the features and I am for sure not going premium and I will support Kevill when he offers this because its his establishment as long as these 2 things happen:
Premium cannot up your playing cabibilities like give you a better gun scope on RS or something Evil also assured me that going premium will never be mandatory, he typed me in the eye (parady of looked me in the eye) and said Gaming will always be free at its basic level. Shoulda saved the Convo huh??? REGARDLESS is there a way to take the bold of the admins off and to ignore the chat games, I look for an open AOE2 thing that hasnt started and all I see is chats. Also are there any new things without premium that are of any use??? Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: PsYcO aSsAsSiN on February 22, 2003, 02:20:10 am You are all lucky this isn't mandatory like it was feared it would be a couple years ago. However, the fear was only paying a couple bucks a month, not fifty.
After looking at the price, I think that Kevill got a little overzealous and is looking for a quick infusion of cash knowing that some of the hardcore people who still suck his dick (think along the lines of Utterer [is he still around?] and people like that) will purchase the new upgrade regardless of its lack of features and exorbitant price. But there is no reason to worry about this unless the quality of standard gameranger starts declining and/or a mandatory paid subscription is implemented. Colin: These feature's aren't even worth $20. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: Ace on February 22, 2003, 03:59:50 am For the people who are bitching, will you please tell me how something that it no way limits my current capabilities with GR yet gives Evill more money to continue developing his product is a bad thing?
If you don't like it, don't get it. But for fuck's sake, don't bitch about something that is going to help you in the long run. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: [[EUR]] HoloGram on February 22, 2003, 03:04:11 pm Hahaha this Idea is a joke - I have to pay for features that noone really needs.
examples: - personal chat room ---> alternative : openig normal game and chat in it. - Biiig Icon and mor pers. info : who needs this?? Is it usefull? - Personal Name: good Idea - but not really great that would be worth it to pay 50 $ - and I like the old ID better - so U can see who is how long on GR. - Ingnore of non prem. members: is BS b/c then after a while after a few ppl got this the way would maybe start to bann the others out of games so we would need the prem. too to get started. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: †FiRE Infection on February 22, 2003, 04:22:11 pm Colin, gamespy also has a lot more users, about 3 million at a time actually. Now, isn't it a rare accurance that you see 400 people on gameranger at a time? I think Gamespy can afford a little more. If you want Gamespy, go get a pc, it's not fair to compare the two.
Also, what is this crap about boycotting premium members? We felt like paying for extra features, it in no way affects you and you would have no reason to boycott us? If you don't like it, don't get it, you'd have no reason to bother the people who like it. 50 dollars isn't a ton of money and the features are pretty neat. You guys talk shit then ask me all of these questions about it and say how cool the away message is and tell me to put porn in my profile then I get banned ;). (First premium user banned btw) Just chill out, it's got some nice features and I also wanted to support the program that I've been useing for over 2 years now. A lot of people ask me if I think it's worth it, it's really nice and the features are cool so if you have 50 dollars definately get it. But keep in mind, this isn't necessary, it's just supporting a program that most of you have been using even longer than me. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: kami on February 22, 2003, 05:03:14 pm Yeah, I see it mostly as a way to support an app that I've been using for free for over 3 years.
Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: tasty on February 22, 2003, 06:19:07 pm Evill says that this is just the first round of premium features and that another update is coming that will add even more features for premium users. If you update now he says you will get any new features when they come out. I don't really like the idea of having to pay 50 each year, but I'm considering purchasing premium just to support Gameranger. Maybe when I finally find a job.
Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: Mr.Mellow on February 23, 2003, 12:04:37 am Blah, just found this thread. You guys really need to get a hobby if you're whining about something that doesn't even affect you. I think I said this a million times already, but I'll say it again. Don't think of it as paying $50 for a few extra features. Think of it as donating moolah to Evill and getting some cool stuff in return. It's kind of like when you donate blood to the Red Cross, and after a while, they give you a mug. However, I'm not comparing the features to a crappy mug. Some of the features seem pretty cool. Anyhoo, guys, don't bite the hand that feeds you. Evill is giving you this for free, you only have to pay if you want to. Now let's all hold hands and sing, and maybe partake in kinky activities involving an orange or other citrus fruits.

For comparison: GameSpy Arcade subscribers get this for $20 USD Yes. This is valid.In-Game Voice Chat Subscribers can use Arcade's voice chat even after launching a peer-to-peer or parlor game! Quote Ad-free Gaming Have you used GSA? This is a major "feature" because without paying, you're subjected to fullscreen movies every time you change rooms, or after certain periods of time, or doing just about anything. You can't cancel them either. It's a feature because they made the free version so obnoxious.Subscribers never see banners or full-screen ads in Arcade, 3D or Roger Wilco. Quote Instant Game Patches Again, this is a feature because they made the free option obnoxious. ie. FilePlanet. The artificial waiting and lines are their creation in the first place. No lines. No waiting. Just game patches and updates the second you need them. Quote Custom Portraits Yes, you get this with GSA premium. However, with GSA free, you don't get ANY icon customization.Ditch the plain brown wrapper - make and upload your own Arcade player portrait. Quote Unlimited Buddy List Again, this is a feature because they made the free version obnoxious. GameRanger's buddy list is not limited at all in the free version. Initially, GSA's free version limited to 100. Last I heard, they now limit it to *10* buddies. I assume that's true because they talk about "space for your *whole* clan." Pathetic.Make space for your whole clan -- add unlimited buddies to your PlayerSpy buddy list. Quote Unlimited File Transfers Yes, that's a valid feature. I question why the word "Unlimited" is there. Since when has direct file transfer between users in any online service been limited?Buddy got a file you need right away? Have ?em send it to you through PlayerSpy! Quote GameSpy3D and RogerWilco Full Versions GameRanger is the equivalent of GSA and GameSpy 3D. Have you seen the server browser in GSA? Roger Wilco is in-game voice chat. They've already mentioned that before as a feature, and now they're mentioning the same thing again.Subscribers get access to all of the subscriber benefits in GameSpy 3D and Roger Wilco -- 3 products for 1 low price! If anyone comes and tell me I should pay just to support GR they are wrong. This is a travesty. Evill really does know that this isn't worth the money. He compared it to .Mac in chat. I compared it to .Mac for a reason. GameRanger has not changed the free service. You don't have to pay.Quote I'd be glad to pay as soon as it offers even a portion of what it should. I use GR for games not to chat. I clicked their banners sometimes just to make Evill feel better. I will not be blatently taken advantage of especcially if you consider the alternatives. You sometimes clicked the banners? Wow, that's big of you. Blatantly taken advantage of? The free service hasn't changed. If you're going to do a critique and comparison, do it objectively. I am more than happy to say that GameRanger Premium should have more features (if I didn't, I wouldn't have listed that on the Premium web page). It was released now, because if I didn't, I'd probably have had to shut it down -- as it is, I don't actually receive any money for two months. I also released it because there were people wanted to pay for GameRanger as it is, without additional features. People that have used GameRanger for *less* time than you (something you gloated about above), yet felt extremely appreciative from the number of hours they've enjoyed from it. You, on the other hand, are just being an asshole. Scott. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: [[EUR]] HoloGram on February 23, 2003, 02:55:03 pm Hey Scott and all the others,
Just to make it clear - i didnt want to bitch about this Premium thing - the features are nice but in my opinion not worth it to pay extra money for it. I would support GR blindly when I start earning money - also paying money for the actuallone - but the step from "free" to 50 $ was to high in my eye for the features that are avaible at the moment. But this all gets an other view, when u look on that, that more features will come soon. I did not know this before. The premium GR will not affect other free member - exception: as I already mentioned, when PM start bann all non PM from games. But I hope this will never happen. And I would suggest that NOONE, NOONE should starts to black anyone b/c of he is PM or not. B/c this would make the whole mac commuty brake down. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! I think I said this a million times already, but I'll say it again. Don't think of it as paying $50 for a few extra features. Think of it as donating moolah to Evill and getting some cool stuff in return. Mellow, I couldn't agree with you more. I paid, just because I use Scott's service. I know it must cost him plenty of both time and money. There is nothing wrong with him wanting to make some back, or even a profit. I've seen Evill roll back a patch one night, so we could get Ace's GhR server back online. Complain about him all you want, I few bitches, and all of them small. I paid, and I don't even like most of the features (small bitch, like we mentioned yesterday, I'd rather have the option for my name to not be at the top of lists and stand out). I really like the instant patch's option though, that's pretty cool. If people ask nice, he may even put some mods up there like fileplanet (assuming he has the time and bandwidth to make that change, and that he considers it a good thing). So, like Ace said, why in the hell is anyone bitching about this? Even some of the guys that don't pay for all their games, or any of them, (I will not mention names) have paid for it. Just to support what GameRanger has brought us so far. So what's the bitching about? Would you have bitched if he'd put in a paypal donate button? Would you call for a boycott of anyone that donated? Way to overreact about nothing. If anything, this is a good thing. Evill will have more cash, which could lead to more time to make GR even better. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: BTs_Colin on February 23, 2003, 11:37:08 pm Ok so my post wasn't the best thought out piece of writing :)
I stole the Gamespy idea from Myst (take credit for it now myst!!!). Yes I have used Gamespy Arcade actually. I agree their features are mostly just things GR users take for granted and the GR service hasn't changed. I've seen too many thing that introduce a PREMIMUM membership and then just start cutting things out of the free membership. They do offer a couple of features gamers might actually want though. I'm used to being a second class citizen because of having a Mac. I'm just looking to stop this again. I should clarify being 'blatantly taken advantage of'. I wasn't referrring to me at all. I said it in chat and I'll say it again. I'd rather paypal you $20 CAD then pay $80 CAD for GR premium. I'd feel better knowing you have $20 for the gaming then $80 for idol chatting features. I would exploited paying for that. I couldn't even drink myself into thinking it was a good deal. I just wish GR Premium was something worth paying for as a long time GR gamer. I think it could be. I made a halfassed attempt to make my post constructive at the end. :) I think I will buy premium because I really do enjoy GR and it deserves my support. I feel cheated by the fact idol features are being given as premium usership. I'd rather a package that actually improved GR rather then segmenting it and cluttering it useless things(from a gaming POV). Sorry I'll admit that was a rediculous comparison and assholeish. I don't usually post such BS but ... there it is I guess. :) Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: BTs_Colin on February 23, 2003, 11:38:25 pm And how come whenever you compare Mac's to PC's people always say 'while why don't you just sell your Mac and do it then!'.
Obviously thats not what I wanna do or I wouldn't be here. Seems like an easy way to shrug things off. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: Destructo on February 25, 2003, 06:04:39 pm 50 Us a year....
how about 50 dollars period. a one time shot to join, then like 5-10 a year thereafter? What do you think, 12 yr old kids can pay 50 a year? I agree totally with colin on this. If you don't live in the Us your screwed. 50 Us is like 100 bucks cdn, and even more in europe. If there was a paypal button on the gameranger site, I'm sure lots would donate what they can to keep everything up and running, but to go out and charge a fortune for a bigger picture on the screen is ridiculous. I, like everyone else, understand that you want to make money off of your creation, who dosen't. But I think you will lose more then you would gain buy blasting a huge price right away. 50 is your goal, fine, make it WORTH 50 bucks. For the features I see, 5-10 bucks is a reasonable cost. 50 bucks should GIVE you the games, plus webspace. I pay 50 for my cable. Now it makes everyone who supported GR for a long time feel like shit, mainly becasue space is being sold to the highest bidder. So now when I tell a power hungry moderator or premium user to go suck a cock, I get an instant ban b/c they are a "paying customer". And if they pay, time to kiss ass right? 50 Us a year.... The price may seem a little high now, but I've tried to make it clear that it is my intention to keep adding features to it. This doesn't mean I'm going to have to think of features to add. I already have researched a ton of features that I have lined up. It is going to end up being worth way more than $49.95/year. Don't believe me? Then wait and see instead. Some people have been wanting to pay for it right away. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: |MP|Buccaneer on February 25, 2003, 08:36:33 pm iBeer, did you get anything taken away? Did your service go down at all? Are you not getting the exact same service you got two weeks ago?
It takes money to keep things going, and lots of it. And most people, no matter what they say, wouldn't just donate it. So Evill is offering people a few perks if they are willing to support GR. And for those that say they can't afford $50 USD, it's the same price as most of the new games. How did you manage to get them? Gifts? Have someone get you GR Premium as a gift. Warez? Then who cares what you think. If GameRanger means that much to you, you can find a way to pay for it, just like the games. If GR doesn't, it doesn't, and you still get it for free. Where is the down side? You guys are spoiled. You have a great, free service like GR, that offers a little more for a little money, and you still have to bitch about it. Would it be better if Scott ran out of cash and GR died? And you didn't even have it's free service anymore? Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! This is just adding to my costs for spending way too much this month. that is all. It's like all my favourite bands that sold out, because the ends were more important then the cause. 3rd. I'm going to end up getting premium in teh long run, well, because, i'm rich, and I have a great job, so that's nothing. Finally, if i'm paying for this I want reciepts, and I want records. If it crashes or is down for 5mins, I'm yanking my payment! (hahaha) that last quote was one that I've seen lots of that's all. I know the excitment of payment terms. I've seen promisies, that's all. If you don't come through then that's where the problems arise. I see it everyday, especially when I'm dealing with Microsoft. Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Title: Re:PREMIUM GR!!! WTF!!!?!?! Post by: Saberian 3000 on February 27, 2003, 01:39:06 am To be honest I dont see a problem with Gr coming out with a premium service. The one thing I can say is that Scott has done us all a service by making GR. The only real gripe's I have about it is that when you sign up for premium service you can be positioned in the are's with the rest of you're clan members that do not have the service. I know that a lot of the clans would like to keep their people all in one place to show their clan availability much easier. It sounds like a small issue but I do prefer all my members in the clan to be in one location on the chat board. Another that was a problem for me was the ID#'s, but that was recently fixed by Scott so in the end I can't say anymore on that problem.
So in the end I do believe that GR and Scott Kevill has the right to do this. actually he should have done it a long time ago because he deserves to make something off of his own creation with GR. Yes, there are people out there that are butt-hurt about the whole thing, but in reality nothing other then what was mentioned above is changed, just the additional service. So if ya want it, get it. If not, don't bitch about it. It's not like anyone has really lost anyhthing in Game Ranger. |
