Title: why is it??
Post by: Raven2367 on November 13, 2002, 08:57:45 pm
that hardly any one uses Linux. I mean the Programms are better than on Windows (refering to office) and there are no bluescreens and it hardly crashes. apart from that its freeware!
(just a shame you cant play n e good games on it  ;D)

Linux never took off as a consumer OS, and truthfully, it's really better suited to run a server. It's based on Unix, like an enhanced Unix clone with a GUI (graphic  user interface).

The fact that you can make it look like almost anything and configure it to fit your needs is great to run a server, but you need more standardization for a consumer OS and Linux is just too intimidating for a layperson to really want to bother with. I was learning it about 3 years back, and just abandoned it. The freeware is out there, but for a more standardized version such as Red Hat, you're gonna pay. (Unless it's warez, lol)

A lot of game servers are Linux, I used to see tons for HalfLife. In that purpose it shines. Too bad you can't play the games in Linux!

we had to get some "work experience" away from school so every  kid from my class had to go to some firm. I'm working in a computer part of a big firm with server pc of 2.3 terrabyte  :o. some of the PC have linux on them and i love it.
office is so brilliant!!!
When I've partitioned my harddrive I'll put windows on it to play and Linux to work with.
sounds good huh?

Mac OSX bases on Unix guys. You have a Darwin 6.x.x. Kernel. As a consequence you can use FreeBSD and Linux software after changing some code lines. 'However the GUI isn't compatible so you would have to run the app in your shell which really sucks(no mouse commands).

Bye,

I find it funny that you mock our intelligence when you don't even know what the base for Jaguar is. Technically, Linux is a Unix. OS X (Darwin specifically) is a Unix too. Darwin is lumped into the BSD family even though it uses a microkernel and not a monolithic kernel. It uses the Mach microkernel, and then it incorporates the FreeBSD userland (with a little bit of NetBSD), which is why it is considered part of the BSD family. So to answer the question, OS X is a Unix based on BSD Unix.

PS - Know your role and shut your mouth Typhy.

Typhy, you are far more ignorant than us (stupid as well for that matter) in just about every topic you can think of. What makes you more ignorant is that you didn't read Coco's post above about Linux being a Unix with a GUI...meaning that it is a Unix no matter what.

Back on topic: I partitioned my HD and I am playing around with Linux...seems to be interesting and will require more probing to adjust it to my liking.
