Title: Ghost Recon mods that WORK
Post by: Toby on November 12, 2002, 11:26:38 pm
I thought it might be useful to start a thread discussing mods which work. The three I've successfully managed to try are:

The NCM Desert Siege A-Team mod and the sniper armoury ver 1.3 both from www.ghostrecon.net

and

R6MV Combat Essentials (even though it was an .exe it unzipped fine with stuffit in 10) which I got via a fileplanet link from www.planetrainbow6.com

The latter adds some nice weaponry - and has GREAT sounds.

Chime in, people!

The mods that I would recommend to you guys are any GRM mod, SEALz 2.0, and IDF by our forum friend Cocobolo and DTD. I don't know if these mods convert, but it is defiinitely worth it if you can get them to work on the Mac. As for DTD, I am sure Coco and company could do it if Mauti asked them to (I forget if it is in .zip or .exe format).

Just an update:

the KSK Desert Siege Mod also works from www.ghostrecon.net

And no, I don't think Mods work with the demo, I'm afraid...

And two more:

shootout v2

and

specopsmod v2

both from ghostrecon.net above. Interestingly, all these mods work fine except for some weapon textures - which are missing. Either something lost in the translation or a filename issue again. But since it's rarely more than one weapon a pack, it seems acceptable.

I've tried Navy Seals 2.0 and Black Sun -- both work with no conversion at all.  How come the mods work in GhR when it was such a hassle doing mods in RS-UO???

I couldn't get either of those to work just using Stuffit in X. I had to use my Virtual PC to open the .exe files, and then they worked fine. Did you manage to open them just with stuffit?

Hi Toby.  No, you're right, Stuffit won't do it directly.

I downloaded the mods at work on my Wintel machine, ran WinZip to unzip the files, then ran the .exe files, then recompressed the mods into  .sit files using Stuffit, then sent them to my iDisk from the Wintel, then downloaded the mods again at home, decompressed them using Stuffit  . . . and voila.

Inelegant, but it worked for me.  And no pain-in-the-neck file by file conversion from the PC to the Mac format like you need to do in RS-UO.  Don't know why, but it sure makes life easier.

You should keep the .sit and possibly give it to Mauti for upload on the *DAMN mods section...it would be a service to the Mac gamers who are either too lazy or don't know how to get the mods.

Fellas, go to my iDisk public folder -- fxmsmm -- and you'll find a few mods in Mac-useable .sit and .zip form.

de_dust.sit and Mulsing.sit are especially good map mods.  de-dust of course is the Counterstrike map; and Mulsing is the collection of GhR multiplayer maps adapted for Quick Mission use.

The idf mod is the patch, not the fill mod.  I'll correct tomorrow.

Nice work, franx - thanks for doing that.

By the way, don't download the 1.3 IDF version - at least not the full one. The uniform textures are all blank for mac users. Must be one of those converting problems. The earlier versions are fine, though.

2.Red Dawn (missions based on the 80's movie)

Casper - I don't know what system you're using, but if it's 9:

If you're using Mac OS 9.x, choose Chooser from the Apple menu, then click AppleShare. Click the Server IP Address button, type "idisk.mac.com" in the Server Address field, then click Connect. Type the other user's member name and the user's Public folder password, then click Connect. If the user doesn't have a Public folder password, type "public" in the Password field. Select the user's iDisk and click OK.

If it's 10.1:

If you're using Mac OS X version 10.1, choose Connect To Server from the Finder's Go menu and type http://idisk.mac.com/membername/Public (where "membername" is the person's .Mac member name). If the Public folder is protected with a password, type "public" in the username field and type the Public folder password in the password field.

All this and more from the apple website, in the .mac section.

Course, you can always use the idisk utility, too, in X.

I've gotten the Dam map to work, but it runs at 9fps because of the level size,
The Fishing Hole works, Killhouse double, and a map called prison. I've downloaded all the mods from franx, so i'll try them out, and distribute them amongst my clan.
I noticed a port of Chalet http://www.ghostrecon.net/html/files.htm, it would be pretty cool to gather all the RS map ports and combine them into one collection.

I had the same problem with the Dam level as well. Chalet is also very slow in places as well, unfortunately. You get a MAJOR hit any time you look towards the living room with all the windows.

And then you usually get a MAJOR hit from the terrorists lurking in said room.

Lame joke. Sorry.

I think there is a pack of all the RS level conversions, including killhouse, chalet and Athlete's village - which claims you need Island Thunder to run it - no idea if that's true, though...

Hey everyone,
i just wanted to point out some more mods that work for GhR without conversion- Detachment Alpha, Swiss Spec. Forces and Bundeswehr mod (with HK weapons). They are all ok, but not great. Also, i converted a bunch of mods with  my buddys pc and my two favorites were Spezgruppa Vympel and DTD's IDF (1.2 only, 1.3 doesnt work for some reason). They actually make the game better! It would be great to see some games with these mods on GR sometime.  :o
peace

Well, I finaly found a use for Assassin's computer, to convert ghr mods.
I got the Chalet Conversion (GRS Map pack 1) to work on my mac. the chalet map is pretty cool, with a few new things in it, i didn't get a major lag hit in single player.
Download it at Http://homepage.mac.com/farmerjeb/GRS_Mp1.zip
I also will try some Seals Weapons mod he sent me.

Just out of curiousity....
dont the desert siege and island thunder mission packs work sort of like mods? if so, wouldnt it be possible to install Island thunder on pc and then move the files to my mac and play IT? something tells me that would be too easy....
btw, as far as mods go...IDF and Vympel are by far the two best mods ive played so far, so if youre thinking of converting any i recommend those two. i guess they will soon be on the new DAMN site anyways.

Thanks for all your input. Franx you don't need to convert the mods as in RS because Ghost Recon uses a very modern xml format. - You can also use XML for websites. You can define tags by yourself however the reason why you don't have to wipe out the control chars is because it only looks for the value between the xml tags. The app doesn't care about chars in front or behind the tags.

Toby use Expander 7.0 it allows fulllength filenames contrary to Expander 6.x

Bye,

Mauti
