Title: College and how to pay for it?
Post by: Cossack on August 28, 2002, 01:22:45 am
Well its official. I am broke. I got two options. Sell my computer and DSL line or ask money from my dad. I really hate asking my Dad because i feel so dirty and lazy taking money from him. Not to mention I hate his guts. So  how did some of you who are or were going to college pay for it? I gotta job as a cameraman for the local news and thats about it.

Grifter, Deadeye and myself were all lifeguards.  Full time in the sumer, part time in school.  Grifter and Deadeye were on scholarships, so they don't count.  I could pay for about half my tuition and living expenses when I was an undergrad.  I took out student loans for the rest.  I was about $14000 in debt when I graduated.  Once I started working though, it only took me a few years to pay it off (I just lived like I was still in college for the first few years of work, like everyone else I knew.  Especially since Grifter, Deadeye, me and 3 others shared a house when we got out of school.)

Well COssack, you should have signed up for the FAFSA and other federal/state related aid programs...that is what my friends who went to a private school and need some money did.

You have a few options going for you...

1) Take out loans and repay them after your schooling is done

2) Apply for the scholarships that are still hanging around

3) Get a job that pays a steady income to alleviate some of the costs

4) Beg your dad

Of course all of this depends on where you are going to college, is it a private or public institution, and how much money you got right now.

Cossack, being that I am going to a public university (University of California - Los Angeles) my costs after tuition, room and board come to be around $20000. MY parents are paying for some of it, and the money I have gotten from previous and present jobs is also going to the tuition. Lemme know what your situation is...there is almost always an answer to most situations.

Bucc: My best friend is a lifeguard for the summer here in socal and he made a load of cash... something like $15 an hour for lifeguard training and $25 an hour for working the beaches and stirpping hotties bikini's in his mind.

Well, my dad saved up some odd amount of money in mutual funds for me and my brother...my brother used it to buy a condo thing so he ended up having to take student loans but being that it was in Boulder he made 90k profit on the condo and is now able to basically pay off his loans and buy a house.

I'm going to college in town so I don't have room and board so I'll probably graduate with no debt and about 5k and a 4k car which will probably be put into getting a new used car.

Well I go to a public University. University of Texas-Austin. Anyhow I swallowed my ego and let my dad pay for some of the expenses. Especially the medical bill for my broken ankle. He hasnt paid a cent for my college except for my admissions forms. You know what the funny thing is? You all say Lifeguard was a good way to go. Well I was a lifegaurad all summer long. Of coase you earn alot less money when you are looking after a pool instead of a beach. There are so many levels of lifeguard certification. I think I got this temporary financial crisis covered. I managed a year with out taking out a student loan. I guess now I will have to do it.

Or, if it's your preference, you could join the military and have all your expenses paid.  Have you considered the National Guard?  It's only a part-time job and they'll pay for your education.

You could do what I do and prositute yourself for money. :) No, I would suggest trying to get a loan from your dad, and if not that, work more.

the trick with lifeguarding is 1) become an instructor, it pays better.  2) teach lessons, they pay better. 3) don't drink your paycheck.

3 was obviously the hardest part of it.  haning out with 40 other college students and not drinking your paycheck every week was not easy.

gald to hear that you have the money for this term.
