Title: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: *DAMN Mauti on January 29, 2008, 12:26:44 pm In the last 8 years the internet connection speed increased dramatically.
When I moved out from my mom in 2002, my first internet connection was about 300kbit/64 dl/ul. Only a half year later it was doubled to 600kbit/128; In 2003 it was increased again to 1Mbit/256kbit; Then it went to 4Mbit/512, 8Mbit/512 and in december 2007 they again doubled it to 16Mbit/1Mbit and and I still pay my 49€ per month as I did in 2002. For more reports and a better comparison just take a look at this thread from 2003: http://www.damnr6.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=3534.0 and this 4 page thread from 2005: http://www.damnr6.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=9397.0 So in my case the dl speed increased by a factor of 54 and the ul rate by a factor of 16. Not bad! For comparison in the same time the cpu speed only increased from 2.8 Ghz to 3.2 Ghz(Macs from 1Ghz Dual Powermac G4) and cpu cores increased from 1 to 4 cores on a die and from 2 to 8 cpu cores in consumer machines(including the Mac Pro, although it is more like a work station); Beside that if I test my internet speed at http://www.speedtest.net I also really come close to the nominal speed of my ISP. Depending on daytime I get between 14.5 to 15.7Mbit dl speed and upload is always between 0.9 and 1 Mbit. What speed do you reach? For current games a higher upload rate would be great, but beside that I'm very satisfied with my ISP. Bye, Mauti Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: *DAMN Mauti on January 29, 2008, 08:57:48 pm Whoever checked upload > 8mbit: What do you pay and where do you live for such an amazing upload rate? Say hello to hosting 64 player matches ;-)
Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: BFG on January 29, 2008, 10:32:30 pm No kidding who the hell has that kind of upload speed?!!!
Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: Worst on January 31, 2008, 05:26:57 pm I checked it
i pay about 8€ a month for the connection. campus one - in my room :D in fact i dont know the speed but i noticed one that i was seeding torrents over 1 mbyte (over 8mbit so) i wanted to check the >1 mb up too (at home) but i wasnt allowed (about 30 €) beside that i have no clue of my current download speed (i went once over 2 mbyte but a room mate told me he went once up to 10 mbyte) yes i can host for much, but not enough ghost recon players left to go up to 36 at once (i once manage to catch 24 players) - the other games i play dont require me to host about the speedtest.net website, i cant check it there : i see the gauge moving but the test is done before it stop getting highier Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: *DAMN Mauti on January 31, 2008, 06:22:46 pm Oh wow. 8 Euro is like a joke. A good one. Really amazing, and if you live at the campus I can imagine how fast your conn is. When I'm sitting in the university library I also get incredible download/upload speeds. When I uploaded the Desert Combat BF mod(> 600MB) I decided to do it from the library and also got something like 8 - 10 Mbit upload speed and downloaded big mods with 40Mbits and more, unfortunaly we don't have such connection offers for home(no campus, 'cos university is located in vienna's downtown).
Worst, i have to say I'm jealous ;-) Saving 41 € each month and then getting such speeds… @ GhR: you are right but 24 player matches are still amazing despite GhR's age. Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: Worst on January 31, 2008, 10:38:57 pm in fact, the university where i am was created before the city :D
so now, they are selling their own connection as isp for student :p furhtermore for real big downloads i do it from university's real connection (ethernet access point) 24 players … happend once in nearly 4 months - i agree i havent played much ghr lately, no idea of the activity level - was pretty low last time i played Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: Worst on February 12, 2008, 07:37:07 pm we are using skynet as provider - i did the test today

192Mbit download speed and 190Mbit, upload speed!???? I can't believe my eyes. That's as fast as my notebook drive write speed. Jesus you could host multiplayer games with 1000 of players at once or host voluntairy a WoW server ;-) I have to do an ethernet connection test at my university too. However even my Ethernet access can only handle 100Mbit ::lol:: Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: :MoD:Shade on February 21, 2008, 01:10:09 am My university connection is lame. Only just over 5Mbit down and 2Mbit up. According to speedtest.net though the UMaine connection is the third fastest connection in the state behind Roadrunner Business and Comcast . .. :(
Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: :V: Crusader on May 19, 2008, 05:46:51 pm aargh, you should do something between 4 and 8 dl speed, theres big differentce.
test said i have dl 5,5 ( i pay for some more tho, but dunno ::) ) upload very slow dont know why only 0,5 =/ Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: :V:*Beast on May 20, 2008, 04:40:24 am according to my ISP (Telenet Belgium) (http://telenet.be/260/0/1/en/residential/internet/turbonet.html): 20 Mbit down / 1 Mbit up
I normally should pay € 61,32 a month. I know, don't tell me, it's a ridiculous high amount and it's too much compared to what similar ISPs in other countries provide, but luckily my company pays half of it. and the real figures are: (http://www.speedtest.net/result/273535099.png) (http://www.speedtest.net) 20Mbit my ass!!!, maybe I should change node, that's the disadvantage of having a broadband cable connection, too many people on 1 node in the same area, also my neighbours have the same ISP, so I'm screwed anyway!! ;D Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: Civrock on June 07, 2008, 08:05:05 am (http://www.speedtest.net/result/280974882.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

If you are still living in Berlin you should have much faster options. Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: eur.reddust on September 27, 2008, 05:35:42 pm Born in Berlin, living near Hamburg in a socalled "dsl white spot". Horses in my back, cows to the right, corn in all the other directions and any sidewalks in the side streets. Nice, isn't it? But now You know why.
Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: *DAMN Mauti on September 30, 2008, 12:30:36 am Hehe, indeed.
Title: Re: Internet speed - a retrospective Post by: BFG on October 21, 2008, 08:58:19 pm Hehe my broadband sucks, there's no question about it. They [virgin media] do now offer 'upto 20mb' download speeds but frankly it costs sh*t loads, i don't like the 'upto' and the upload speed.... well put it this way i dont try uploading work to ftp sites now, its quicker to go out and by myself a puppy, wait for it to grow up, have lots of puppies, train then up to be sled dogs, wait for an ice age, and then take the work by dog sled to its destination....

Supposed to be 16/2 but I'll take it. ;D |
