BTW...this game f'n pwns - I wonder if it will be Intel Macs only....if so, probably better off buying the PC version and Bootcamping it.  Can take advantage of more features that way...like xfire. If its PPC as well, I hope to see some old faces out there.

I'm very excited about the performance too and how it compares with the PC version. May multithreaded OpenGL will give it an extra boost.

However I'm glad to see that still some AAA games are coming to the Mac. GameRanger support would be fine too ;-)

Typical, i buy a game for the pc and then it comes out on mac... why couldn't get bring us GRAW2 instead? ;)

But its pretty sweet, The graphics of CoD4 are mind blowing - i have a few issues with the game play (i still find it far to 'run and gun' but the hardcore mode does help in that people are a lot more carfull. I've yet to find anything that replaces my love affair with the original GhR but CoD looks the **** and is great fun to play!

Maybe a game like this is exactly what the DBL needs???  ::)  Imagine playing against some of your past foes. - .:cO:. MoD...Po)...{E}.....[a]...AgT..... the colons....*.. ! .. Tribe.. GRAW 2 to the Mac? Hmmm.  No patch since last August, and it is sorely needed.  If you were wondering why no one is mentioning GRAW2 anymore, it is because Ubisoft are a bunch of asshats.   ::stupid:: ::ass::  The online servers have 100 max on at any given time.  There are more COD4 servers running than people playing GRAW2.
Released in June for the PC I think...4 patches in 7 months.....COD4 4 patches in 2 months.  Ubi could learn a thing or 2 from IW.
They have taken their premier titles and mismanaged them into a PC failure. Such potential. With the abysmal R6:Vegas support that caused insane flame wars on the official forum...Ubi has decided it wants more of your cash...and plan on releasing R6:Vegas2.  I really hope they have learned form their mistakes...just a hunch..ahhh Not.

Run your Cod4 on XP BFG....I bet it will be smoother than Mac....unless IW figures out what EA couldn't.

lets hope for PPC that would be fun,  maybe the DBL have a CoD4 tourny........ ;)

CoD4 = Great Game  :)


I installed it some 3 weeks ago ( as an XP-game) and i really like it much more than i liked Crysis.
And Crysis was a great game too. I play it almost 24/7 here.

However - if the CoD4 for mac will have the same ups and downs as for example Command & Conquer 3 - Tiberian Wars, I really wouldnt recommend buying it.

I bought that game for my nephew, and seing how it runs on Mac, compared to how my C&C demo runs on XP, makes me shiver. Its still some 1000 gaming years behind the PC-version. Not just in terms of Frames-pr-second, but also in the way it works in multiplayer, and the lost ability to join all the servers in the C&C community.

I got 4 gb RAM on my mac, but my XP 32-bit version wont allow me to see/use more than 2 GB when I am in PC-mode. Yet still, the PC-version works a lot better in terms of graphics and speed, than the mac-version could ever dream of. On top of that I am not sure the CoD4-mac players would be able to join the PC-servers.

I am, and i must say its so smooth - admittedly the mac is pretty pimped (just installed another 8Gigs of RAM :D) but even with max settings it runs smoother than, well something damn smooth.

Its just the hardcore game-play still doesn't quite float my boat - i want more in the way of camouflage, and i want a slightly slower game because even with hardcore everyone seems to run and gun it!

I play it on xbox and still have my old shitty dual 533 g4 i bought back in 2001 so I'm not sure if I'll buy this.

However if enough of ya'll get back into it I will be there one way or another!

Ordered a new Mac Pro 8-core 2.8Ghz with 8800 GT and 4GB RAM, scheduled shipping date is Feb 15th, w00t! CoD4 is on top of my list of games that I need to buy, not sure if I should just get the PC version for Bootcamp or wait for the Mac version. :-/

Second thing on my list is the new Nostromo (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=390404) gamepad, lol. ;)

The 8 cores don't make any difference for gaming, but beside that a very nice dream machine Civic! Congrats!

I would wait for the Mac version and see how well it performs. Of course it is cheaper to buy the PC version, but may the Mac version comes with a bonus. At all it would be great if Aspyr could release a hybrid version with the Mac and PC app in a box, like Blizzard games, but I guess they don't have the license to do so.

Unless your doing serious mathmatical processing or video encoding etc those 4 cores are going to get bored, but like mauti said, hell of a machine!! :D

But id say just go buy the PC version - dirt cheap, and it runs phenomenally well!

... PS, where is the right handed version of the Nostromo for us poor left handed users who are ALLWAYS ignored :(

Nice machine but a waste of $ (for gaming).  Build a PC for $1500 and it would smoke the listed above playing COD4

Well I guess nobody buys a Mac Pro only for gaming, otherwise you would buy a console or as said a PC with probably a SLI or Crossfire configuration.

been playing CoD4 for a little while now and i'm hooked. i still prefer the pace of ghost recon though. ARGH!!! couldnt UBI/grin just have pimped up the good old one with better graphics, new maps etc etc. crap! ok, sorry it was off topic.

Of course I'm not going to use it just for gaming... I usually run a million things at the same time so the CPU power will be used. CS3 and such also like their fair share of processing juice.
I'd never buy a PC either way, even if it was just for gaming... just no, to hell with those pieces of junk, filled with junk and other junk. I need my Mac OS and the Apple hardware.

As for the Nostromo, I used to play GhR with the predecessor of the n52te, the n52 (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=157024), and it was amazing. Once I got used to it, I didn't want to go without anymore. I'm pretty sure they're allowed at LANs etc since it's basically like one of those custom keyboard and mice. Personal preference. And no, it doesn't include any automated fuctions, keyclicks and such, of course not.

Finally got a chance to try it and OHMAHGAWD... amazing graphics, amazing performance, amazing physics, everything amazing. Only thing this game is lacking is big maps like in GhR but everything else is pretty much perfect. I especially like the way ranks and rewards work, pretty cool, better than in AA.
As for performance, with everything on the highest settings I'm getting a steady ~90 FPS (limited by the game by default). In situations with a lot of action it drops down to like ~60 which is still smooth as butter. No stuttering or anything, ever. I'm using Vista x64 Ultimate via Boot Camp btw.

I got a 10-man Ventrilo located in NY for personal use that's not being used so if anybody wants to meet up for some games of CoD4 or AA (latest Windows version), lemme know. :P

Sounds very nice and 64bit Vista was a good decision if you want to use more than 3gigs of RAM on Windows too.

Btw at which resolution do you play?

I dont like the game so much after a while, you get fragged far to often by noobs spawning throwing there 3 nades.... 

the airstrike is nice thing strange is that it comes before the helicopter since its far better (makes easily ~7kills helicopter makes most times 3-5 )

hardcore is the best thing on cod4 and ofcourse the golden desert eagel (my ak isnt golden yet and will propably never be, no idee how to make that much headshots witha stupid shotgun  ::) )

couldn't figure out how to see fps there anyway was still nice expirience. if i compare cod4 with Bf2 i prefer the athmosephere from bf2, coz that was just like a real big war with ambushes etc...

cod4 is more a carnage then a tactical schooter (imo...)

Just got BF2142 and it runs good on my Intel Imac. I will most likely but COD4. Its a shame there isnt a community for mac gamers like this site was. sniff sniff.

Anybody still here? Some of the original z][t guys including myself finally pretty much switched to CoD4 (seems like AA is old and dead, heh) and we've been playing it a lot. Not really competitively, just casually.

Recommend some good servers, location doesn't matter. Go.

It got delayed multiple times until they released the date of September 15th end of August... they couldn't keep this date either and now it just says "soon" again, heh.

That game was added to Gameranger this week and there's a bunch of servers to join.  I assume that means Mac users can actually play with the PC users.

Would've been dumb if not. I wonder if my PC serial would work with the Mac version... would save me the trouble of having to boot into Windows every time I want to play some CoD4. :::-/::

Today Aspyr's http:///www.GameAgent.com started were you also can buy a downloadable version of CoD4, but for the same price as the boxed version. Come on!? A downloadable version should be at least 10 bucks less.

At least CoD4 is finally out and I'm exited about the first Mac reviews.

I bought the downloadable version today.  The game runs good on my computer and I just barely meet the system requirements.  2.16ghz Intel Core Duo X1600.  I can join all the PC servers right thru Gameranger.  What server do you guys play on?

I'm playing from a Mac so I can't use xfire and I can't IP join a server which sucks so I don't think I can get on your servers Mesa.

Did you notice that Aspyr ported version 1.5? PC version has been at 1.7 for a couple weeks, lol. That's why Mac CoD4 users can't join PC servers at the moment. Well, v1.7 servers but I don't think there are many 1.5 servers left, if any (obviously wouldn't know since I'm running 1.7 via Boot Camp).

Aspyr's Mac Gaming department is dead.

Btw, I got an alpha version of an inofficial Mac Xfire client. It's not publicly released yet but if you're interested, send me a PM. Currently it provides a working friends list, chatting, adding and removing of friends and status of your friends and yourself (you can see what they're playing etc). It also has limited support of some Mac games like WoW (it tracks your playtime for your Xfire profile etc).

Meh, 1.6 has been out for months and 1.7 for weeks also. They let Mac users wait for months already, only to release an almost outdated game, with an outdated version. All this probably mainly because of the useless copy protection nonsense hackers already got through it seems.

Yes they concentrate too much on copy protection. Especially I guess if you want to play online the game uses a master server like any ID games to authenticate the serial number. So you can't play online as soon as two or more people try to login at the same time.

any body got any info on how they're finding the mac version and how its comparing performance wise to say running via bootcamp?

got to agree with the aspyr comments... unless something dramatically changes i think we wave bye bye to any AAA titles etc

I've read that the performance is comparable but rather worse than better. Overall good comments in case of Mac performance, though.

They were already making a concentrated move towards XBox and PC titles three years ago.  "Stubbs might not be the best, but it gets our foot in the door with a big name".  Though it seems like Aspyr's recent and coming release list, regardless of platform, is extremely anorexic, especially when you compare it to 4-5 years ago, when they were pounding out 2-3 big titles at least every year.  (KOTOR, SimCity IV, Battlefield 1942, Splinter Cell, MTX, The Sims, Starwars: Battlefront), among others.  

And now all we've got on their development list is Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, which will probably be a good cash cow, and followed by "Nintendo DS Hello Kitty".   ::nade::

Makes one wonder what they're up to, or if the company is stagnating and preparing to go under or be bought up.

I wonder if they plan on doing Call of Duty 5 because that game comes out in November.  Maybe a 2009 release?  They did CoD 1, 2, 4 so why not 5.

CoD5 doesn't really look like a mass multiplayer FPS like CoD4, from what I've read it's pretty much only COOP. It's from a different game developer also. 4 was Infinity Ward and 5 is coming from Treyarch.

CoD WaW looks graphically inpressive theres no question about that, the quality of lighting, textures and modeling is, well 'nice' doesn't quite do it, 'awsome' feels a bit much.  Though like Civic says it does seem to be far from the mp focus of cod4.
interesting to hear that the performance isn't to bad on the port for mac..... im all for proper ports and have very mixed feelings about cider, no question its increadible how many 'unofficial' ports of games there are available, but there are many issues.

Quite honestly i think its the end of the traditional Aspyr and mac games relationship - Like you guys have said they have been moving for a while, and there is little future it seems in the traditional ports to the mac platform they used to provide.

Those who already got the CoD4 Mac version: Can You install the game with a different language than english? If so, which are available?

I heard the PC Serial #'s work with the Mac version.  Thats kinda interesting, if you can acquire the Mac version and you already have the PC version you could use your PC Serial #.

PC serials do work with the Mac version. It's the same authentication server afterall.

Well, I just got a hold of the Mac version and it installed and worked without a problem, the MP application that is. Simply put in my PC serial and started the game. Before that I imported my player profile from my Vista partition which was also compatible with the Mac version. It took most of my settings correctly and my profile was complete. Some settings were ignored because apparently you can't change sound settings etc in the Mac version, all it has is volume unfortunately.

I then went on to try a couple rounds, with my PC optimized configuration, and it was mostly smooth but definitely noticable worse than in Boot Camp. Moments with a lot of action going on and other players around caused significant slowdowns in case of FPS and it was pretty annoying. My average was something between 40 FPS and 100 FPS, not even close to what I get in Vista (steady 150+ FPS, no drops).
I did read, though, that there are still problems with the nVidia GeForce 8800 FT which cause bad FPS in some games. Some people with ATi videocards are reporting very smooth gameplay with all settings on max, without any optimizations, even on slower Macs, including laptops.

Well, I guess my conclusion is that it's playable but if you're very competitive like me, you can get annoyed very easily by poor performance which in FPS games often results in deaths. :P I'm hoping that Apple resolves the apparent driver problems of the 8800 GT with some games sometime soon. If you have an ATi card, try it yourself and lemme know how it went.

I'll grab a copy - running an ATI1900 card so will be interesting to see how it works out!

ironicly pun if it had been a cider port it would have been pretty straightforward but i think you might struggle getting them running on the mac port.

Well the maps come with 3 files when you download them (2 .ff's and a .iwd).  I thought you could just drag them into the proper folders and it would work but apparently not. :(

I guess you figured that one out already, but if not: go into you console and write "conntect IP:PORT(if other than usual) and you can IP join any server you want.

That said I also own CoD4 for Mac since january and I like it except that their is no spawn invincible time and some game modes are buggy, e.g. Sabotage round limit 2 standing 1 - 0. Last round ends in a draw and the complete game is a draw.

So once I'm coming forward with the *DBL I hope to play a few rounds with you =)
