How long has it been down for?

GR was down most of yesterday, was up again this morning with the following "news":

Server Problems

There are some intermittent but fairly major problems being experienced by the server. I am working hard to get them resolved, but resources are stretched fairly thin, so unfortunately I do not know how long this will take.

www.gameranger.com/stats tells a pretty good tale about how GR is doing these days.

So its just 'our games' that are dead - lots of folks still use it for other crap. they just don't seem to have any form of community outside of GR...

*DAMN was always more of a community than GR itself was.

And Mysterio is still here forum h00ring, times haven't changed.

I could take the time to delete your post and warn you for flaming, or something.  But I dont think there would be much point.  Flame on!

I brought this posting forward to see what it had to say about GR. I think the real question to be answered here is "Are we looking at the death of the Damn Battle League?"  Mauti...where are you? If we're going to depend on Game Ranger to keep this community alive, we're in big trouble.

True story.

got crabs in hight school, from a hot trailer park skank.

scared the FUCK out of me when i found them..was itchy..scratched...found em.
Vomited hard...(about ten minutes)

went to walgreens, still a bit shook up..whispered to the doc on call for help.
He came over seemed real nice, was helping me be discrete..went to the shelf..

pulled of a small tin of ronsonol. some scissors, a bic lighter, and the daily news.

still sfraid to ask questions.i looked on, wondering wtf...

he leaned in, real quiet and serious..and told me how to fix the problem.

Take scissors, cut pubes off left side..
take the ronsonol bottle (lighter fluid) and sprinkle it in the hair on the other side.
(they would hate the lighter fluid, and try to run away..they would release their grip.

THEN, wen they ran out into the shaved area..i was then supposed to light them on fire and smash them with the rolled up sports section.

all said with a straight face.

fucking flabbergasted..for a sec not sure what he just told me to do.
then he broke down laughing so hard he started crying..

Between sobs..handed me a big bottle of RID.

told me to leave the girls that smoked cigarettes alone.

I agree that the DAMN community is what makes the GR community. Without a season going on, use of GR is going to drop. What is happening with the DBL? I keep hearing it will be active again in a few weeks or few months or whenever. It has been almost a full year since the last season. Is it ever coming back?

Until then, I'll continue to play my WoW and just wait for my guilds call that the season started and I'm neded to play again.

Well It may not be entirely official, but theres nothing wrong with getting at least one of the remaining *DBL admins to help start a mini-tourney. Sort of how the GRPA is doing with GhR. Theres actually alot of interest generated everytime it happens.. I'm sure we can get a few fun games of RvS Tournies & Matches going. Are there any *DBl RvS type admins still out there?

If people would get off this thread and play there would be a GR and Rvs.  Stop talking and play bitches!

There was some corruption apparently, but it was sorted after a few hours.

To those that still play on gameranger and enjoy playing there, Evill has disabled new premium signups for now HOWEVER you can still renew your premium as long as you don't let it expire for too long. Everyone seems to think that evill gets millions from doing this, but that is far from the truth and in actual fact one of the reasons why he disabled premium signups was so he would get less people demanding this and that from him and complaining every chance they got. Although the complaints are justified when the product isn't up to scratch, it's not worth Evill's time and money when he gets little return.

Soon enough you know, Gameranger just won't be there for us anymore. (I'm thinking that time is coming up) Then what? We might not all agree with everything Evill does, but he tries his best in the best way he knows how and all people seem to do is chuck it back in his face. Without him, we wouldn't be the community we are today. Just something to thing about :)

Then we'll all get Intel Macs and play with the PC world.  :)  That, or sell our souls to WoW.

I have not been able to host for a few months now. I asked Evill for help and he said he couldn't, then went on and on that he couldn't help everyone with there problems. I can appreciate his issue of not being about to support everyone but am I suppose to ok with not being able to host with a service I paid for?

Did you already try all the normal cause of not being able to host? That you are behind a firewall or router and need to do port forwarding.

Now, apparently if you play around with your banlist without a good editing application, it'll damage the text script or some rubbish (evill explains it better, but that's my best explanation :P)

So what Lob may have done and which we corrected, was deleted his banlist, hence deleting the script of some sort. Best thing to do is just trash the banlist outright. All he did was put in some numbers into his banlist and he could host again. Apparently a common problem.

so what's going on with GameRanger? I guess most games just use their own server list managment, and probably some are just playing on Windows these days. How is the Mac gaming situation nowadays?

I only noticed that the GameRanger stats and top games page is disfunctional since months.

Hi btw! and welcome back.

Before the stats page went on the frits, there was a steady decline in the number of games played, and general activity, reflected in graphs.  Down to a point before when R6 was released.  In short, GR is dying.

It seems we need a new mega game(notice how I avoided the term "killer game"). If none are released may have to create our own. However I think GameRanger isn't dead, may for newly released first person shooters, but for games like AoE it is still used.

Well I hope new games come out that bring back GameRanger, 'cos I really dislike all these anonymous server lists.

You have to wonder though, with people picking up Intel Macs, if they will get the PC or Mac version of the game and not just Bootcamp to play on the PC side, where there is a significantly larger group of players.  So even if there is a huge new FPS released, if it comes out on the PC as well (which it will, if it's a big title), then the Mac gaming community might still stay dead.

Sorry, im a little pesimistic about these things.  :(

Yes, you are right. Further in most cases the PC version will be cheaper than the Mac version. The only plus I can see if a Mac title comes later, it may already include some expansion packs.

At all I don't understand why more developers like Blizzard release Hybrid versions of their games(Mac and PC in a box), 'cos after making Mosquito Ops it's really not difficult to create a game multi platform. Of course only if you use OpenGL. You just have to take care about byte streams(little - big endian awareness) and may adapt the window and control managment(if you don't use SDL or GLUT). Most physic libraries and other libs already exist for Mac and Windows. But I guess that's a different story.

To stay ontopic: GameRanger and its technology could be ported to Windows too. Personally I really prefer the GameRanger way of playing a game, than browsing a server list.

May we gonna see more homebrew games in the future that also people with no high end graphic cards can play. Last but not least not every Intel Mac will have Wndows installed. I guess most casual gamers would buy a Mac version rather than buy/steal Windows and the PC version of that game.

Sounds great. I've heard greats thing about 'Gears of War' but never got round to playing it. I'm sure we will have to wait a while to get it though but when it does get here it will hopefully be a hit.

Its good seeing alot of the old gamers, I miss many, especially Shiex!! But, seriously, what happened to GR?  People got tired of it? not enough new games?  I feel so bad, GR was the place to be whenever, I came home from school.....now...it feels like a part of me died.
