I thought id make myself a nice lil hidy hole to gossip about the world cup. Note to Americans this a reference to the real world cup where teams from around the world play football. No don't say soccer, its a stupid word and the game is called football with that little rant out the way...

Anywhoo a nice way to start things off (unless your from Paraguay) seemed to be to say whoo hoo we're off and its England 1 - 0 Paraguay.

Got a bit of a pool going on at work, the pot is something like £35 i think and i managed to pull the Ukraine out the bag... not to shabby but not exactly brazil!

Wasn't wildy inpressed by Germany's 4-2 win over Costa Rica on Friday, ok up front they did some damange but that isn't a solid defence by any account.

Ecuador produced a bit of a shock beating Poland 2-0... wasn't expecting that!

Anyway, anyone else following the games? Anyone?

Though I won't be able to keep it up, I've watched all the game so far.

I agree that Germany generally looked suspect, they just played a worse team than themselves. They did have two brilliant goals though (the first and fourth). Definitely the highlight goals so far, though Beck's goal (I mean the other dude's own goal) wasn't bad. At least Germany vs. Costa Rica was interesting, Poland vs. Ecuador was not pretty football.

My ignorant American thoughts about the sport have been surfacing such as "why does the offsides rule in this sport encourage shoddy defense", "why are they so quick to assign own goals" and "how did they give Steven Gerrard a yellow for that?"

Well I've watched all the matches so far and wasn't impressed by the German defending but it was a super game with two great goals included. In school my class has got a thing going where you get a team each. I pulled Ivory Coast out and despite their hard group I'm happy with what i got. I would either like to see England or Ivory Coast win. England as then i could say 'Yay Northern Ireland have beaten the world champions'. Obviously i would like to see Ivory Coast win to get the £100 pot and they two players from Arsenal are representing them (Eboue and Toure).

I just watched the England match and the first half was nice football from England but in the second half they seemed to get worse, giving the ball away too easily and Erikson made some stupid changes. I also saw a bit of the Ecuador vs Poland game. It was scrappy football and not enjoyable to watch.

Does anyone else agree with me when I say Walcott shouldn't be going and Defoe or Bent should have been in the squad? I may be an Arsenal supporter but I think it's stupid to take a 17 year old who hasn't played a game in the premiership and has only played 12 'Coca Cola Championship' matches.

Maybe we could write who we think the top 5 teams most likely to win in order are and why?

First half England dominated... second half they pretty much fell to pieces, gave away way to much possession and looked pretty knackered. Would have been nice if we'd won by actually scoring a goal as well ;)

Gotta agree with you a bit niklot regarding roony.. yeah so he's good but he isn't the greatest, and england shouldn't use him as an excuse if the others don't pull their socks up.

I was quite dissapointed about  the final score between Sweden and Tobacco.
Sweden had most of the gameplay, actually Tobacco only had 2-3 good shots else Sweden had it all. They just needed the last guy to kick the ball in. I was sitting and just waiting on the goal. Sweden played quite good apart from they just couldn't kick the ball in.

The big match winner was Tobacco's keeper, he showed that he is a world class keeper with alot of saves.

Hopefully Sweden can get the ball in next match!

I'm a Mexican-american whose favortie team is England, go figure.

ummmm... I've concluded that Engalnd is most boring team to watch in the cup this year... kick and run, reminds me of my U-10 soccer team back in 4th grade.  Argentina... they pass very well and are fun to watch most the time... one shitty part about Argentina is the constant diving... We'll see how everything turns out.

Holland impressed me a lot today. Hopefully the inner conflict over Robben's lack of passing gets sorted out and he picks his spots a little better. They looked really solid though.

Now to bash the USA... After watching most the first game I've concluded whoever ranked the US #5 is very wrong.  We'll start with the USA's defense, it's flat, slow, and unable to win anything in the air, nothing else to say about that.  The midfield probably connected MAYBE 20% of the passes they played up... most of them going straight to the other team and they can't cross for shit.  The forwards, they can't finish the ball on the oh so rare opportunities a cross or a well played ball does come.  The way the US is playing right now I doubt they could have beaten any team in the world cup.

Germany, England, Italy, Czechs, Brazil and Argentina are the top favorites.

The only time that a team not from the same continent won the Cup was Brazil in Germany....

Brazil and Germany should again be the Top Finalist.... But the house should have the advantage, as always... not only the crowd but the refs .

Germany or Brazil will take the Cup....

Argentina is the best team I have seen play so far. They have great passing, great strikers, and an extremely young extremely deep roster.

I agree Stripes, France have been really disapointing for the moment, but if you take a look at the games, refereeing was bullshit and it was a big lack of luck sometimes...

Argentina are going to casue some damage. In defence of England they have raised their game each time enough to win... if they keep doing that then they could keep going, but i doubt it.

France made really an impressive game yesterday. It's sad they meet Brazil so soon, could be a really nice world cup final. It's cool to see those guys can when they want. Anyway, Brazil France is gonna be THE match of this world cup. Looking forward to seeing some very nice football.

The ideal finals for me would have been France vs. Brazil.  Both are amazing teams to watch when they're at the top of their game.  Should be a great match Saturday morning.  I predict whoever wins that match goes on to take the cup.

I never said anything about anybody making faces, if the germans were making faces then I gues it proves their maturity... I said the german assistant coach was smack talking the argentina players after the game. (that's what our announcers in the US said after the game) and that's just childish to rub in a loss like that.

Brazil got completly owned, It's quite weird to see that , according to the team and strikers they had. People will say that 1-0 is not owning , but if you look real close, Brazil never really threatened France.
I'm think the way france defend is really great.
Also I'm quite afraid by the game against Portugal, cause they bitch a lot, and do a lot of simulations. France might win against them, even if it's gonna be a hard game, but if they do, i hope they don't get too much yellow cards cause zidane, sagnol, ribery, henry or thuram have one already, which would mean no final, and those guys are really important to the team.

That's not exatly true bfg. Premier league is really different from leagues in the other countries. Refereeing during the world cup isn't too different as it is in spain, france, germany or italy. That's why A. Wenger is always stoned when he comments international games, premier league is way too different...

Rooney wouldn't have gotten a Red Card if he hadn't pushed Cristiano, and Ronaldo did what any top soccer figure would have done in that situation, stand-up for his teammate and try to gain some advantage out of it.

For those of you watching, I think you all know what I'm talking about when I say what a way to end a career... who the fuck head-butts a guy in the chest?  And here I thought Zidane had class... what an f'n baby.

I feel sorry for a few of those french boys who ran their socks of and worked so hard, but my god am i relieved that Italy have just won.

The Italian player could have and most probably did say something offensive, but Zidane was stupid enough to fall for it and retaliate. Simply incredible he couldn't put his team and country in front of his ego in a momment like that!

He didn't play as i thought he would, but he wasn't THAT bad too.

It was a game of fitness. Both teams gave 110% of what they had. Remember that each player (assuming that plays the whole game), runs an avg. of 6-8 miles per game. Now in a tournament this long, by the Finals, legs give out very quickly, cramps, etc.

Italy dominated the 1st half, and France the 2nd. But both teams were pretty much done towards the end of the game and penalties looked very much possible.

This is why I don't understand why Zidane did what he did. He must have known that he was key for the penalties if it came to that..... To me, he not only stained his retirement, but betrayed his countrymen and teammates.... So sad!

But Zidane has a history for losing his head and head-butting opponents.He once hit Jochen Kientz in the same manner, a few years back. He also got a red card and a 5 game suspension for his dirt deed and caused Juventus of Italy important games which lead to its debacle. It is important to note that he was just returning from being sent from a Champions League match vs. La Coruna of Spain for accumulating yellow cards. This same act, cost Zidane the "Golden Ball" award for best Euro player in 2000.... just as now he compromised Frances shot at the Title.

His almost sacred image will not be tarnished once again!

Well, What ever, as Tirofino pointed out, Zidane has made a lot of bullshit in the past. During the 98 world cup, he got sent out against Saudi Arabia... This was, of course a bad gesture (tho i really wonder what this lil bitch of Materazzi said to him), but well, i'll just try to forget, cause it ain't much compared to Zidane's wonderful career. I'm not sure that this ejection made France lose, if you look at the TEN last minutes of the game, france was playing 10vs11 but still dominating the game.
What ever, Idiot gesture, but i can't get mad at the guy.
This is rather sad cause in france, and in loads of country in the world, Zidane is like a god, every children love Zidane, I'm not decieved for that he betrayed his countrymen, but for that he betrayed the children who worshiped him...

It was perfection to see Zidane being sent off. It made looking at every boring match with both teams defending instead of trying to win worthwhile. I always disliked Zidane for looking like he was too good to be playing. His arrogance almost cost him (and his teammates) in the first half when he shot the penalty the way he did. It was a priceless moment when he showed his weakness. What a great way to end his career....dumbass.

Panelkas (what zidane did on the penalty) works almost everytime, it has nothing to see with arrogance, it's a way or another to score a penalty. Well what ever, if you knew the guy, if you ever heard an interview of him, you would have noticed that this guy is everything but arrogant.

Zidane is the kinda guy always refusing to talk on television cause he is quite shy, he is never making fun, or lacking of respect to the other team. What i'm saying is that when zidane decides to be really mean, you can easily see it, he isn't one of those guys hurting other people in the tibia or in the knees while the ref isn't looking and pretending they haven't done shit when they get caught ( exatly like italian defence did all game long yesterday night :)  )

Clay, what does that movie have to do with you saying that the two kids who killed 13 people did it because of video game rage? Because, if you had looked once at the credits/beginning of the film,  or read one review you would have realized it was "INSPIRED" by Columbine, not "BASED ON", which means, it's going to be majorly dramitized and it won't follow the actual events that led up to Columbine. So if those kids in the movie killed people because of video game rage, and news articles say the kids at Columbine were psychopaths and wanted to kill as many people as they could before they killed themselves, I wouldn't go around saying that this movie shows that the kids at Columbine killed people because of video game rage. I don't see how im showing a "really low intelligence quotient" either.
